The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ has recently announced the completion of the main works of the Roads and Infrastructure Development project in Al Egda, Al Heedan, and Al Khor (Package 1), with a completion rate of about 95%. The project, located west of Al Bayt Stadium, covers the Al Egda area west of Al Khor Road and the Al Heedan area east of it. The project serves 738 plots for citizens and aims to bring vast improvements to the area by developing internal streets and infrastructure services such as rainwater and sewage drainage networks, allowing citizens to start building their houses and providing connectivity with future public facilities in the area.
Eng. Essa Al-Hillabi, the Project Engineer in the Northern Areas Section, detailed the works of the project, including a 19 km-long road network with traffic safety elements, a 38.8 km-long pedestrian and cycle paths, a 23.7 km-long sewage network, a 33 km-long surface and groundwater drainage network, a 6.7 km-long treated water network, and a 20.4 km-long potable water network. The project also involved extending drainage pipes, establishing a new system to distribute water flow, and constructing an emergency rainwater storage tank with a capacity of 44,000 cubic meters to reduce water accumulation during the rainy season.
The project progress has seen the completion of the rainwater drainage network, sewage network works, development of the drinking water network, and extension of communication lines. Road works are nearing completion, while beautification works and installation and operation of street lighting poles are currently underway. The reliance on local materials and manufacturers was emphasized, with over 75% of local components used in the project works.
The project scope has been divided into four smaller phases to be implemented in succession, with a focus on accelerating each phase to reduce the impact of construction work on the area’s residents. This approach may increase the total project period compared to working on the entire project area at once, but it allows for better management and control of the construction activities. Ashghal has appointed public relations officers, including Qatari nationals or Qatar-born individuals, to enhance communication with the residents, address inquiries, and mitigate the impact of the works on the community.
To facilitate communication with citizens, Ashghal has provided a designated number, 188, operating 24/7 to receive requests and inquiries and respond promptly. The Authority is committed to ensuring the successful completion of the project while minimizing disruptions to the residents and ensuring high-quality infrastructure development in the Al Egda, Al Heedan, and Al Khor areas. With the majority of the project works already completed, the community can look forward to enjoying improved road networks, drainage systems, and other essential infrastructure services that will enhance their quality of life.
