French prosecutors have launched an investigation into cyber harassment following a complaint by Algerian Olympic boxing champion Imane Khelif. Khelif won gold at the Paris Olympic Games, but faced gender controversy during the competition. The investigation was opened Tuesday in response to the high-profile gender row, according to the Paris public prosecutor’s office.

Khelif received a hero’s welcome upon returning home after her victory in the women’s 66kg final. She addressed the crowd, expressing her desire to showcase the strength and presence of women, particularly Algerian women. The International Olympic Committee took over the boxing competition in Paris after losing patience with the International Boxing Association (IBA). The IBA, led by Umar Kremlev, had disqualified Khelif and another boxer from its world championships the previous year, claiming they were actually men.

Khelif, aged 25, described facing a relentless campaign and thanked the Algerian people for their support during the ordeal. She emphasized the importance of representing Algerian women and restoring the country’s honor through her performance at the Olympics. Khelif’s victory is seen as a significant achievement for Algerian women, showcasing their strength and resilience on a global stage.
