The Indian Consulate in Dubai launched an insurance scheme on March 1, 2024, to provide compensation of up to Dh75,000 for families of Indian workers in the UAE in the event of the employee’s death, whether due to accidents or natural causes. Over 5,500 workers have already subscribed to the Life Protection Plan (LPP) to address the gap in employment benefits for the 2.27 million blue-collar workers in the UAE. While many companies offer health insurance and compensation for work-related injuries, there was previously no mandatory coverage for natural deaths, leading to financial difficulties for families.
To address this issue, the Indian Consulate facilitated a meeting between major UAE companies employing blue-collar workers and two insurance providers, Extra Co Group of Companies and Gargash Insurance. Employers can opt for this plan for their employees, and it is not currently available for individual subscribers. The plan offers extensive coverage, including worldwide protection for employees with a UAE employment visa, benefits for death from any cause, coverage for permanent total or partial disability due to an accident, and repatriation expenses of up to Dh12,000 per person in case of death.
The cost of the plan ranges from Dh37 to Dh72 per year, depending on the compensation amount chosen by the employer. Around 3.5 million Indians live in the UAE, with about 65% employed in blue-collar jobs. In 2022, the Indian Consulate reported 1,750 deaths in Dubai, with 1,100 being workers, and a similar pattern was observed in 2023. Over 90% of these deaths were due to natural causes, highlighting the need for insurance coverage for Indian workers in the UAE.
The LPP aims to provide financial security and peace of mind to the families of Indian workers in the UAE by offering compensation in the event of the employee’s death. With coverage for natural and accidental deaths, as well as disability due to accidents, the plan ensures that families are protected from unforeseen financial burdens. The availability of repatriation expenses further eases the financial strain on families during a difficult time.
Employers have the option to choose the compensation amount based on their employees’ needs, with prices starting as low as Dh37 per year. The high uptake of the plan by over 5,500 workers indicates the importance of such insurance schemes for the Indian community in the UAE. By partnering with insurance providers and facilitating the subscription process, the Indian Consulate has taken proactive steps to ensure the welfare of Indian workers and their families in the UAE.
Overall, the introduction of the Life Protection Plan is a significant initiative that addresses the gap in insurance coverage for Indian workers in the UAE. With comprehensive benefits, affordable pricing, and high uptake rates, the plan is set to provide much-needed financial security to the families of blue-collar workers in the event of unforeseen tragedies. As more employers opt for this scheme, more Indian workers are expected to benefit from the peace of mind and protection it offers in times of crisis.
