Saudi Arabia has made significant progress in improving the quality of its roads, with the road quality index rising to 5.7. This places the Kingdom in the fourth rank among the G20 countries, according to a survey conducted by the Saudi Roads General Authority. The survey found that more than 77 percent of roads in Saudi Arabia meet safety standards, surpassing the 66 percent target set last year. These results were revealed 500 days after the launch of the Roads Sector Strategy, which focuses on safety, quality, and traffic density.

The Roads General Authority has implemented a number of initiatives to enhance the quality of roads and improve traffic safety. This includes establishing a road safety data center to collect and analyze data related to traffic accidents, as well as opening a regional office for the International Road Assessment Program (IRAP) to enhance international cooperation in traffic safety. The authority has also converted road maintenance contracts into performance-based contracts to improve the quality of work and developed an advanced system for managing bridges to enhance their safety.

In terms of road projects, the implementation rate has exceeded 90 percent due to efforts to complete projects quickly and efficiently. This success reflects the effectiveness of the strategy in achieving its goals and enhancing Saudi Arabia’s position internationally as a global logistics center. The authority is aiming to further enhance road safety and readiness by reaching the sixth global ranking in the road quality index and reducing the number of road deaths to less than five per 100,000 people. Additionally, the goal is to cover the road network with traffic safety factors and increase private sector participation in operational work to 20 percent.
