Nathaniel Alapide is a Dubai-based artist known for transforming sandy shores into intricate drawings and portraits using a garden rake and a unique vision. Originally from the Philippines, Alapide moved to Dubai in 2003 with a desire to build a better future for himself. His childhood love for art, nurtured by his father, eventually led him to become one of the most recognized sand artists in the UAE.
Alapide’s journey into sand art began as a tribute to his late grandmother, evolving into a career that has allowed him to create breathtaking masterpieces on the beaches of Dubai. Working early in the morning when the tide is low, Alapide uses a garden rake to draw on wet sand, inspired by artists he discovered in encyclopedias during his childhood. The ephemerality of his art adds a unique challenge, as each creation must be completed before the tide washes it away.
His dedication to sand art has led Alapide to work with prestigious brands like Burberry and Adidas, collaborate with National Geographic Abu Dhabi, and even set a Guinness World Record in 2022 for the largest sand image. Despite the challenges posed by nature and time constraints, Alapide finds solace in creating art that is transient yet treasured, embracing the impermanence of his medium as a reminder of the constant change in life.
One of Alapide’s most cherished creations is a portrait of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, with his camels. This artwork reflects Alapide’s deep admiration for Sheikh Hamdan and his connection to camels, which extends beyond art. The artist’s interactions with Sheikh Hamdan, from his days as a lifeguard at Wild Wadi Waterpark to his role as a scuba diver at Atlantis The Palm Aquarium, have further solidified his appreciation for the country’s support and recognition of his unique talent.
Despite the acclaim and accolades he has received, Alapide remains grounded in the philosophy that drives his art. The transient beauty of sand art serves as a reminder of the constant change in life and the importance of letting go. Through his work, Alapide aims to connect with something larger than himself, capturing moments of fleeting beauty that reflect the impermanence of existence. With a deep appreciation for nature and a unique artistic vision, Alapide continues to inspire others through his captivating sand art masterpieces.
