UAE’s Safia Al Sayegh carries hopes in Paris Olympics 158km road race – News

Emirati cyclist Safia Al Sayegh is set to represent the UAE in the women’s road race at the Paris Olympics, making her the first female Emirati cyclist to qualify for the Summer Games. Competing against 96 cyclists in a 158km race, Safia carries the hopes of her nation in this prestigious event. The UAE is represented by a total of 14 athletes across 5 different disciplines, including equestrian, judo, athletics, cycling, and swimming. The Olympics have seen a range of age milestones in cycling, with American Kristin Armstrong becoming the oldest cyclist to win an Olympic medal in the road race category at the age of 43. On the other end of the spectrum, Belgian Rik Van Looy remains the youngest Olympic champion in road cycling, winning gold at the age of 18 years and 226 days. In the UAE’s participation, swimmer Maha Al Shehhi and Yousuf Al Matrooshi have showcased their skills, breaking records in their respective events.

In the equestrian competition, the UAE team concluded its participation in the team jumping competition, finishing 18th overall with a total of 72 errors. The individual competition still awaits the team’s riders and will take place over two days at the Palace of Versailles. Sprinter Maryam Al Farsi also showcased her talent, finishing ninth in the 100 meters with a personal best time. The judo team represented the UAE across various weight categories, with notable performances by players such as Bashirat Kharoudi and Aram Gregorian.

As Safia Al Sayegh prepares to compete in the women’s road race, the UAE’s presence at the Paris Olympics continues to make a mark across various sports disciplines. The determination and skill of the nation’s athletes are evident as they strive to represent their country on the global stage. With a diverse range of talents in equestrian, judo, athletics, cycling, and swimming, the UAE is showcasing its commitment to sports excellence.
