The historic city of Muharraq in Bahrain is currently undergoing a significant transformation led by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning. The ministry has issued a request for proposals to manage various heritage sites in the city, with the aim of preserving Bahrain’s historical and cultural essence. This project involves the demolition of certain old villas that are no longer viable and the restoration of those deemed worthy of preservation. The Tender Board is set to evaluate submissions for this undertaking on 26 September, marking the beginning of a two-year contract for the redevelopment of Muharraq.

The primary objective of this project is to rejuvenate Isa Al Kabeer Palace and revitalize Muharraq while maintaining its unique character. The contract includes general excavation and levelling works for the demolished villas, as well as maintenance and repair of the old villas that are to be retained. Additionally, a visitor centre and three prototype houses will be designed and constructed as part of the Muharraq old city development. This initiative aims to save numerous architectural treasures that are currently at risk of collapse, ensuring that Muharraq’s rich history is preserved for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.

The redevelopment project covers an area of 1.4 million square metres, featuring 12,000 square metres of green spaces, heritage buildings, new units, and restored structures. Parking facilities and movement corridors are also included in the plan to enhance the overall accessibility and functionality of the city. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Amna Al-Rumaihi, recently highlighted the project’s progress during a panel discussion, emphasizing the importance of adhering to guidelines established by royal directives from His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

The redevelopment of Muharraq is a comprehensive and multifaceted effort that aims to preserve the city’s historical and cultural heritage while modernizing its infrastructure and amenities. The project has already completed several key steps, including the publication of a project guidebook, the launch of an official project page, and the initiation of field surveys and property expropriation. By implementing these initiatives, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning is demonstrating its commitment to safeguarding Bahrain’s historical legacy and enhancing the quality of life for residents of Muharraq.

Overall, the transformation of Muharraq represents a crucial step towards preserving Bahrain’s rich history and cultural heritage for generations to come. By revitalizing historic sites, creating new green spaces, and modernizing infrastructure, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning is not only preserving the past but also ensuring a vibrant future for the city. Through careful planning and collaboration with stakeholders, this project is set to create a sustainable and thriving urban environment that honors Muharraq’s unique identity and history.
