The Qatar Olympic Committee, led by H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, recently reaffirmed its dedication to the Olympic movement during a reception for Team Qatar at the 2024 Paris Games. The event, attended by high-profile individuals such as H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani and H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, aimed to showcase Qatar’s commitment to supporting sports and social development globally. In his address, Sheikh Joaan emphasized the importance of the Olympic spirit in fostering friendships and promoting peace through sports, highlighting the unifying power of athletics in transcending cultural and geographical boundaries.

The reception also marked the launch of the first Arabic translation of selected writings by Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic movement. This initiative, titled “Selected Texts: Volume 1,” was a collaborative effort between Qatar Museums, the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum 3-2-1, Qatar Olympic Committee, and the International Olympic Committee. The book launch, presented by Alexandra de Navacelle de Coubertin, aimed to promote the values and principles of the Olympic movement within the Arab world, further solidifying Qatar’s commitment to upholding the spirit of the games.

In addition to the reception, H E Sheikh Joaan chaired a coordination meeting of the Presidents of the Olympic Committees of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, further demonstrating Qatar’s active role in collaborating with regional partners to promote sports and uphold Olympic ideals. The meeting, attended by QOC Secretary-General Jassim bin Rashid Al Bueinain, discussed various strategies and initiatives to strengthen cooperation and enhance the development of sports within the Gulf region.

The event underscored the significance of the Olympic Games as more than just a platform for athletic competition, but also as a catalyst for unity, friendship, and peace among nations. Sheikh Joaan praised the efforts of the International Olympic Committee, led by President Thomas Bach, in fostering an environment where the values of the Olympic spirit can thrive, even in the face of challenges. By highlighting the transformative power of sports in breaking down barriers and bridging cultural divides, Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to promoting global solidarity through athletics.

As Qatar continues to champion the Olympic movement and its core principles, the reception served as a platform to celebrate the achievements of Qatar’s athletes while also emphasizing the shared values and spirit of the games. Through events like the book launch and the coordination meeting with Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Qatar is actively contributing to the promotion of sports, social development, and peace on a global scale. By upholding the legacy of Pierre de Coubertin and his vision for the Olympic movement, Qatar is solidifying its position as a key player in advancing the values of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and international cooperation within the realm of athletics.
