The Women’s synchronized 10-meter platform event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games saw North Korea clinching its first ever Olympic diving medal with a silver, while China continued its dominance with a gold. The Chinese duo of Chen Yuxi and Quan Hongchan secured their 50th Olympic diving gold medal by taking a commanding lead from the start. Leading by nearly 14 points after two dives, the competition was for the silver and bronze medal spots. North Korea’s Jo Jin Mi and Kim Mi Rae finished with the silver, expressing hope to challenge China for gold in the future. Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson of Great Britain won the bronze.

The Chinese pair scored 359.10, finishing well ahead of North Korea’s 315.90. For North Korea, it was their second medal at the Paris Games, following a silver in mixed doubles table tennis. Ukraine’s Bailo and Lyskun dedicated their performance to those impacted by the war in Ukraine, expressing pride in representing their homeland amidst challenging circumstances. The Mexican duo of Gabriela Agundez and Alejandra Orozco aimed to add to their bronze medal from Tokyo 2020 but settled for fifth place, with Orozco announcing her retirement after the Olympics.

Mexican diver Orozco plans to retire after the Olympics, marking the end of her partnership with Agundez. The duo formed a successful team, earning bronze at the Tokyo Olympics. Orozco has a successful diving career, including a silver medal in synchronized platform at the 2012 London Games. Growing up together and sharing dreams and goals, Orozco and Agundez have made a mark in Mexican diving history. Despite missing out on a podium finish in Paris, the pair remains proud of their accomplishments and legacy together.

It was an emotional competition for Ukrainian divers Bailo and Lyskun, who competed amid the ongoing war in their homeland. Despite finishing second-to-last, the divers received warm cheers and dedicated their performance to their country, soldiers, athletes, and coaches affected by the conflict. For first-time Olympian Bailo, the Games represent an opportunity to share her country’s story on a global platform. The support for Mexican divers Orozco and Agundez was evident, with fans from Mexico cheering them on in their final synchronized dive.

Leading by a significant margin, the Chinese pair added to their nation’s impressive medal haul in the sport. The duo scored 359.10, showcasing their skill and expertise in the discipline.
