The General Directorate of Marine Wealth at the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) has recently announced the lifting of the shrimp fishing ban in Bahrain, effective from August 1st, 2024. This annual ban, which usually runs from February 1st to July 31st each year, is a key measure aimed at protecting the marine resources of the Kingdom. By allowing shrimp populations to replenish during this period, the SCE ensures the long-term health and sustainability of Bahrain’s marine ecosystem.

The SCE’s decision to lift the ban comes in line with regional efforts to safeguard fish stocks in the Arabian Gulf. The Directorate General of Marine Wealth has highlighted the importance of adhering to authorised fishing methods, as outlined in Decree No. (205) of 2018, which prohibits bottom trawling (Kraf) in Bahrain’s territorial waters. By enforcing these regulations, the SCE aims to promote responsible fishing practices among local fishermen and contribute to the overall well-being of the marine environment.

The lifting of the shrimp fishing ban signifies a significant milestone for Bahrain’s fishing industry, as it allows fishermen to resume their activities and contribute to the economy. However, the SCE continues to stress the importance of complying with regulations and following sustainable fishing practices to ensure a prosperous future for the Kingdom’s marine resources. By working together towards common goals, fishermen and authorities can help maintain a healthy balance between economic development and environmental conservation.

As the SCE encourages responsible fishing practices, it also urges fishermen to consider the long-term implications of their actions on the marine ecosystem. By allowing shrimp populations to replenish during the ban period, fishermen can help ensure a sustainable future for themselves and future generations. Additionally, the SCE’s commitment to enforcing regulations and promoting environmental awareness underscores the importance of collaboration between stakeholders in safeguarding Bahrain’s marine resources.

In conclusion, the lifting of the shrimp fishing ban in Bahrain marks a positive step towards supporting the Kingdom’s fishing industry while safeguarding its marine resources. Through responsible fishing practices and compliance with regulations, fishermen can contribute to the long-term sustainability of Bahrain’s marine ecosystem. As the SCE continues to advocate for environmental conservation and sustainable development, it is crucial for all stakeholders to work together towards a common goal of preserving the Kingdom’s natural heritage for future generations.
