The recent landslide in the district of Wayanad in the southern Indian state of Kerala has left many residents devastated, with over 100 family members and friends of Shajahan Kuttiyath either dead or missing. Shajahan, who works as a driver in the UAE, hails from the village of Chooralmala, which was one of the worst-hit areas. The tragedy has taken a toll on his family and friends, with many still searching for their loved ones in hospitals.

Shajahan’s heartbreaking story reflects the devastating impact of the landslide, which has wiped out entire areas and is considered the worst disaster to hit Kerala since the 2018 floods. Many factors could have led to the disaster, including excessive rainfall causing a river to change its course. The rescue operations are ongoing, but the process of rebuilding will take a long time, with hundreds of families having lost everything and needing to start their lives from scratch.

The death toll in Kerala has risen to 158, with rescue operations facing challenges due to the bridge that was washed away in the landslide. The Kerala government is working on building a temporary bridge to bring in heavy equipment for the rescue mission. Shajahan expressed concern for his daughters’ education after their school was destroyed, with his elder daughter in Grade 10 and facing a critical year for her future. Many families in the area have had their homes destroyed, adding to the challenges they face in rebuilding their lives.

Shajahan’s friends and childhood acquaintances have also been affected by the tragedy, with many WhatsApp groups going silent as they mourn the loss of loved ones. The devastation of seeing familiar places reduced to mud while coping with the loss of close friends has left Shajahan and others in shock. The community is coming together to support each other and help survivors, but the emotional and physical toll of the disaster will be felt for a long time.

The landslide in Kerala has brought immense grief and loss to many families, with Shajahan Kuttiyath’s story highlighting the human cost of natural disasters. As the rescue efforts continue and the rebuilding process begins, it is essential for communities to come together and offer support to those in need. The tragedy serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of preparedness in the face of such calamities. Through resilience and solidarity, the affected communities in Kerala can slowly rebuild and recover from this devastating event.
