During school runs, urban traffic congestion is a daily issue. However, with schools closed and many residents on summer holidays, motorists are enjoying reduced commute times. Urban planners and transportation experts suggest implementing practical solutions to maintain less traffic during the summer months. Dr. Monica Menendez from New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) pointed out that traffic patterns change significantly during school holidays and weekends.

Dr. Menendez emphasized the importance of exploring flexible working hours and remote working arrangements to alleviate congestion. By spreading traffic peaks throughout the day, road capacity can be used more efficiently. In addition, using big data for traffic management can help predict traffic patterns and reduce congestion. Emirati traffic safety researcher Dr. Mostafa Al Dah suggests using AI and predictive tools to create solutions to mitigate traffic issues.

One out-of-the-box solution proposed by Al Dah is to give incentives for people to stay off the roads during peak hours. Enhancing pedestrian-friendly infrastructure and implementing safety education can encourage active commuting or public transportation. Home-schooling can also be encouraged to reduce the time students spend commuting to and from school. Adjusting daily routines, such as flexible work and school times, can also help alleviate traffic congestion.

Urban planner Aileen Llagas suggests upgrading and expanding road infrastructure, improving traffic management with real-time monitoring, and implementing congestion charges to discourage driving during peak hours. Encouraging carpooling, using school buses, and adopting flexible schedules for businesses and schools can also help reduce congestion. The use of alternative modes of transportation, such as public buses, trains, bicycles, and walking, is another strategy to combat traffic congestion.

In conclusion, the key to solving traffic congestion issues lies in implementing innovative solutions and smart technologies. Public awareness campaigns and suitable programs are necessary to create a more efficient transportation system, even during peak hours. While waiting for major changes, individuals can contribute by checking real-time traffic updates, planning trips ahead of time, and avoiding congested areas. By being part of the solution, everyone can work towards reducing urban traffic congestion and creating a more sustainable transportation system.
