The play Rebecca, which has been performed on stages across the world, is making its debut under the open sky at one of Central Europe’s most important open-air festivals. The story revolves around a wealthy man who lost his first wife under mysterious circumstances and his new wife, played by Petra Gubik. The actress describes her character’s journey from a young girl to a sophisticated woman who yearns to break free from societal expectations. The play first premiered in Hungary in 2010 and has been reinvented for a modern audience by director Attila Béres.

Director László Barnák, of the National Theater of Szeged, also takes the stage in the role of Colonel Julyan, leading the investigation into Rebecca’s death. Barnák describes the play as intense and dramatic, with music playing throughout the prose scenes to maintain tension and tempo. The performance will be held at Hungary’s largest summer theatre, with a capacity of 4,000 people, at Dóm Square in Szeged. The play will run a total of five times during the festival’s duration.

The reinvention of Rebecca for a modern audience involves a focus on self-confrontation, a theme that resonates with 21st-century audiences. Director Attila Béres expresses the importance of not simply reviving old productions but reimagining them in new ways to engage contemporary viewers. The actress Petra Gubik highlights the character’s continuous evolution and development throughout the play, as she transforms from a young girl into a mature woman who defies social norms.

The play’s premiere in Hungary in 2010 at the Capital Operetta Theatre marked the beginning of its journey to be performed at the country’s largest summer theatre. Director Attila Béres emphasizes the need for the story to resonate with present-day audiences and not simply replicate past performances. The involvement of director László Barnák from the National Theater of Szeged adds depth to the production, with his insights into maintaining rhythm and intensity throughout the performance.

The musical play Rebecca will be showcased five times at Dóm Square in Szeged during the festival, providing audiences with the opportunity to experience this timeless story in a unique outdoor setting.
