Belkin, a well-known consumer electronics brand, has made a commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. This pledge includes not only their global operations but also their supply chain and product lifecycle. According to Ernie Roberts, Head of Global Sustainability at Belkin International, the company’s environmental goals align with the UAE’s broader sustainability goals, including support towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030 and the UAE’s Green Agenda 2030.
Belkin’s plastic-free packaging initiative is aimed at aligning with the UAE’s sustainability goals. In 2020, the company set 5-year goals in line with the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals to ensure a better and more sustainable future. By reducing scope 3 emissions, incorporating recycled materials, and eliminating single-use plastics in packaging, Belkin aims to contribute to climate action and responsible consumption and production.
Belkin announced in early 2023 that they are transitioning to new product packaging that is 100% single-use plastic-free wherever possible. This move reflects the company’s commitment to reducing plastic waste and aligning with global sustainability standards. As a response to Dubai’s ban on single-use plastic bags and other packaging items, Belkin had already been proactively working on reducing plastic in its packaging to reduce landfill waste and promote recycling and circularity.
To remove plastic from packaging, Belkin had to redesign its internal structure to meet the requirements for product protection and transportation. The company conducted testing in its in-house labs to ensure the new packaging met reliability, environmental, and transportation standards. By using soy-based ink for printing, Belkin aims to reduce contaminants and improve recyclability in its packaging solutions.
Belkin opted for Post Consumer Recycled materials over oxo-biodegradable plastics for its packaging solutions in the UAE. The company believes that utilizing paper packaging instead of single-use plastic significantly reduces environmental impact. Paper packaging is easier to recycle globally and has a high yield of paper pulp when recycled, making it a desirable material for recyclers. Belkin has also transitioned to Post Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic for products like screen protectors, further reducing its environmental footprint.
Belkin ensures that all its products and packaging solutions comply with UAE regulations on plastic use. The company has developed plastic-free packaging solutions that meet global packaging handling and performance requirements, including drop testing, thermal, and vibration testing. Belkin remains committed to continuous improvement and actively seeks sustainable solutions that benefit the environment and its customers. Through ongoing research and development, the company aims to enhance its sustainability efforts in packaging and reduce its material footprint.
