GMG, a UAE-based conglomerate, has made significant progress in achieving sustainability goals, as highlighted in its first-ever Sustainability Report. The company has achieved 89% green energy usage in its logistics operations between 2022 and 2023, which has resulted in avoiding over 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This showcases GMG’s commitment to embedding sustainability into its core business strategy and operations.
The report outlines GMG’s progress in meeting the goals set in its corporate sustainability strategy, ‘Make a Difference’, which is aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and UAE’s Green Agenda-2030. The company aims to reduce emissions to less than 100 kWh by the end of the decade. Mohammad A. Baker, Deputy Chairman and CEO of GMG, emphasized the importance of a robust ESG framework in driving business evolution, mitigating risks, and creating a positive impact on people and the environment.
GMG’s sustainability efforts are focused on three key pillars: Planet Forward, Inspire People, and Own Change. Under the Planet Forward pillar, the company has achieved a 13% reduction in fuel usage by its logistics fleet, with 7.5% of its energy mix coming from clean sources. GMG has also implemented initiatives such as installing water filters in offices, utilising rooftop solar installation, treating wastewater, and reducing paper and plastic waste.
In terms of inspiring people, GMG has made strides in gender equity, achieving near pay parity at executive and senior levels. The company has extended maternity leave, provided health and safety training, organised well-being initiatives for employees, and trained frontline staff to enhance customer experience. GMG’s workforce represents over 80 nationalities, demonstrating its commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Moreover, GMG has partnered with UAE farms to support local agriculture and trained its private label teams on responsible sourcing. The company has implemented eco-friendly production practices, such as using High IQ Lasting Color eco and Lasting Black eco fabrics, to reduce the environmental footprint. GMG has also established a grievance hotline for employees and suppliers, reinforcing its commitment to ethical business practices.
Razan Akrouk, Chief People Officer of GMG, highlighted the transparency and detailed overview provided in the Sustainability Report. The report focuses on identifying and reporting critical aspects that reflect GMG’s impact on sustainability. By sharing its sustainability initiatives and outcomes, GMG aims to lead by example in corporate sustainability and inspire other businesses to prioritize environmental and social responsibility.
