The Capital Municipal Council, in collaboration with relevant government entities, has completed a comprehensive inventory of historic homes in the old city of Manama. This initiative paves the way for the evaluation and inclusion of these properties in the “Manama Historical Project.” Huda Sultan, a member of the Manama Municipal Council, revealed that Manama boasts hundreds of historic homes with significant cultural value. The inventory process included a thorough assessment of each property’s condition and architectural features. Sultan emphasised that the “Manama Historical Project” is a crucial endeavor aimed at preserving the city’s historical identity. She drew a parallel with the successful “Muharraq Historical Project,” which has transformed Muharraq into a prominent tourist destination, attracting visitors from across the globe.

The “Manama Historical Project” aims to safeguard the historical and cultural identity of the capital’s buildings and urban landscape. It seeks to revitalise the city while preserving its traditional architectural heritage, creating a harmonious visual blend between historic and modern structures. This will be achieved through the innovative application of contemporary architectural elements, ensuring the preservation of Manama’s unique identity. Sultan highlighted that the project will further strengthen Bahrain’s national identity, which has been nurtured for decades. She emphasised the significance of Manama’s old market, a prominent landmark and a key player in the Gulf region’s trade during the past century. It continues to be a popular tourist destination. “The development of Bab Al Bahrain market has added a significant heritage element to the city, making it one of Manama’s most prominent tourist attractions. The project’s success has sparked hopes for its expansion to include the old market and neighboring areas,” she underlined.

Preserving the historical homes in Manama is not only about maintaining the architectural structures, but also about telling the stories of the people who lived in these homes and the events that took place within them. The history and culture of Manama are deeply intertwined with these historic properties, and by preserving them, future generations can continue to learn about the city’s rich heritage. In addition, the preservation of these homes can have economic benefits as well, as they can become tourist attractions that bring in visitors to the city. By revitalising the old city and preserving its historical buildings, Manama can boost its tourism industry and attract more visitors who are interested in the city’s unique cultural heritage.

The collaboration between the Capital Municipal Council and other government entities is crucial for the success of the “Manama Historical Project.” By working together, these entities can ensure that the project is implemented effectively and that the historic homes in the old city are preserved in a way that respects their cultural and architectural significance. The involvement of multiple stakeholders also helps to ensure that the project receives the necessary support and resources to make a lasting impact on the city. Through this collaborative effort, Manama can become a model for other cities in the region looking to preserve their historical heritage while also modernizing their urban landscape.

In addition to preserving the historical homes in Manama, the “Manama Historical Project” also aims to enhance the city’s cultural identity. By showcasing the unique architectural styles and cultural significance of the old city, Manama can set itself apart as a destination that values its history and traditions. This can attract not only tourists, but also residents who are drawn to the city’s rich cultural heritage. By promoting the city’s historical and cultural identity, Manama can create a sense of pride among its residents and strengthen its position as a cultural hub in the region. The project’s success in revitalising the old city and preserving its historical homes can serve as a model for other cities looking to enhance their cultural identity.

The success of the “Muharraq Historical Project” in transforming Muharraq into a prominent tourist destination serves as a testament to the potential impact of the “Manama Historical Project.” By following in the footsteps of the Muharraq project, Manama can replicate its success and become a cultural and historical hub in the region. The revitalisation of the old city and the preservation of its historic homes can attract visitors from around the world, boosting the city’s tourism industry and creating new economic opportunities for its residents. By drawing on the lessons learned from the Muharraq project, the “Manama Historical Project” can ensure that it achieves its goals of preserving the city’s historical identity and enhancing its cultural significance. With the support of the Capital Municipal Council and other government entities, Manama is well-positioned to become a model for cultural preservation and urban revitalisation in the region.
