Qatar’s aviation sector is on a path of development, focusing on adopting the latest technologies and providing the best systems in order to build a safe and sustainable civil aviation system that meets global standards. The Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) has been working diligently to enhance its capabilities and implement various plans and strategies to achieve this goal. One of the key areas of focus for QCAA is the training and qualification of national cadres, especially air traffic controllers, to ensure they have the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively and safely.

Mohammed Al Muhamadi, Head of Development and Training at the Air Navigation Department, recently discussed the training plans and accredited programmes for air traffic controllers in a Qatar Sky magazine. He highlighted the importance of theoretical knowledge and practical training in equipping air traffic controllers with the required expertise. The Development and Training Section at QCAA covers a wide range of areas to ensure that controllers are well-prepared to handle various situations and challenges in the field of air navigation.

In order to enhance the competencies of air traffic controllers, QCAA follows integrated mechanisms that include continuous training, the use of simulators for various scenarios, and focusing on crisis management. Through these mechanisms, controllers are kept up-to-date with the latest methods and systems in the field of air traffic control, following internationally recognised standards and principles. The performance of controllers is regularly monitored and evaluated to maintain a high level of efficiency and professionalism, ultimately contributing to the development of strong capabilities in Qatar’s civil aviation system.

The role of simulators in training air traffic controllers is crucial, as they provide a safe environment for controllers to practice managing air traffic and handling emergencies. Simulators use realistic aircraft, airport models, and weather conditions to simulate a wide range of scenarios and challenges that controllers may face in their work. This enables controllers to develop quick decision-making skills, improve their abilities and confidence, and enhance overall aviation safety. The use of simulation training has been particularly effective in preparing for major events such as the World Cup Qatar 2022, ensuring that controllers are fully prepared to manage air traffic during such events while maintaining high levels of safety and efficiency.

In conclusion, Qatar’s aviation sector is committed to adopting modern techniques and technologies to ensure the safety and sustainability of its civil aviation system. Through rigorous training programmes, qualified trainers, and the use of simulators, QCAA is equipping air traffic controllers with the necessary skills and knowledge to handle the complexities of air traffic control effectively. By adhering to international standards and principles, Qatar aims to build strong capabilities in its air traffic controllers and maintain a safe and efficient aviation system for the future.
