As the Paris 2024 Olympics kick off, Saudi athletes are gearing up for a chance to win their first-ever gold medal at the prestigious event. The Saudi team made a grand entrance at the opening ceremony, showcasing their cultural heritage through their attire. The ceremony, which took place on the Seine River, was a unique twist on the traditional stadium setting.
The Saudi Arabian Olympic and Paralympic Committee organized a national competition to choose the designs for the opening ceremony attire, with the winning designs by Saudi designer Alia Al-Salmi featuring traditional men’s thobes and bishts, as well as brightly patterned thobe al-nashal for women. This reflected the athletes’ pride in their homeland and cultural roots.
The Saudi delegation, led by Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, made a memorable appearance at the opening ceremony, along with representatives from over 300,000 spectators and numerous world leaders. The ceremony, which featured a parade of participating countries on boats along the Seine River, was inaugurated by French President Emmanuel Macron.
The Saudi athletes are set to compete in various events, with Mashael Al-Ayed being the first female swimmer to represent Saudi Arabia at the Olympics. Other athletes, such as Zaid Al-Sarraj, Mohammed Tolo, Hiba Malim, and the equestrian and taekwondo teams, are also gearing up to showcase their skills and compete for a chance at a medal.
Show jumper Ramzi Al-Duhami and taekwondo athlete Dunia Abu Taleb had the honor of raising the Saudi flag at the opening ceremony. Both athletes expressed their pride in representing Saudi Arabia at the Olympics and their hopes for success in their respective events. Abu Taleb, the first female athlete to qualify directly for the Olympics from Saudi Arabia, expressed her aspirations to perform at a level that reflects the support for sports in the Kingdom.
