Access to clean and safe water is a critical issue that affects human development around the world. This was emphasized by Faisal Al-Ibrahim, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Economy and Planning, during the Ensuring Access to Water session at the G20 Ministerial Development Meeting in Rio de Janeiro. Al-Ibrahim highlighted the severe impacts of water scarcity, including health risks from water-borne diseases and restrictions on agriculture that can affect global food security. He stressed that ensuring access to water and sanitation is not just a policy issue but a fundamental human right, aligning with sustainable development goals.

In his speech, Al-Ibrahim also announced Saudi Arabia’s initiative to establish a global water organization, as proposed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This organization aims to serve as a global platform to coordinate efforts, apply best practices, provide financing, and direct resources towards critical water projects. It also seeks to strengthen public-private partnerships and enhance the alignment of government policies with innovative solutions to global water challenges. By prioritizing water-related issues in the G20 agenda and continuing the annual water dialogue initiated by Saudi Arabia during its 2020 presidency, Al-Ibrahim hopes to leverage the Global Water Organization to ensure universal access to water.

The overall goal of the Global Water Organization is to address the pressing need for access to water and sanitation globally. By coordinating efforts, applying best practices, providing financing, and directing resources towards critical projects, the organization aims to make a significant impact on the issue of water scarcity. Additionally, by strengthening public-private partnerships and aligning government policies with innovative solutions, the organization aims to find sustainable solutions to global water challenges. Through these efforts, Al-Ibrahim believes that universal access to water can be achieved.

Al-Ibrahim’s call for prioritizing water-related issues in the G20 agenda is crucial in addressing the global water crisis. By continuing the annual water dialogue initiated by Saudi Arabia during its presidency and leveraging the Global Water Organization, progress can be made towards ensuring access to water for all. The alignment of government policies with innovative solutions and the strengthening of public-private partnerships will be key in finding sustainable solutions to global water challenges. With the efforts of countries like Saudi Arabia and the commitment of global leaders, universal access to water can be achieved.

Overall, the Ensuring Access to Water session at the G20 Ministerial Development Meeting highlighted the importance of addressing water scarcity on a global scale. By recognizing access to water as a fundamental human right and taking proactive steps to coordinate efforts, apply best practices, and provide financing towards critical water projects, progress can be made towards ensuring universal access to water. With continued dialogue and collaboration at the international level, solutions to global water challenges can be found, ultimately improving human development and global food security.
