The upcoming Paris Olympics will showcase American women athletes like Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, and Sha’Carri Richardson, reflecting the rise in popularity of women’s sports in the US. Female fans are increasingly drawn to international sports events, as evidenced by the significant number of women seeking Olympic news online. This surge in interest among female viewers could reverse the decline in viewership seen during the Tokyo Games in 2021. The success of athletes like Caitlin Clark in women’s college basketball has also contributed to the growing prominence of women’s sports in the media.

NBCUniversal, the broadcaster for the Olympics, is taking steps to modernize its coverage for Paris by dedicating more primetime coverage to women’s events. The network aims to attract younger viewers and women by incorporating elements of pop culture and social media influencers into its Olympic coverage. Additionally, NBCU is fostering partnerships between celebrities and athletes to create engaging promotional content. With more than half of the network’s coverage focused on women athletes, the Paris Olympics promise to showcase the talents and achievements of Team USA’s female competitors.

The dominance of American women in the Olympics has been a consistent trend, with Team USA’s female athletes earning a majority of the country’s total medals in recent games. Not only have American women outperformed their male counterparts in terms of medal count, but they have also garnered significant attention and support from fans. The US team for Paris consists of more female athletes than male athletes, highlighting the exceptional talent and competitiveness of American women in sports. This presents an opportunity for broadcasters to highlight and celebrate the success stories of female athletes on the international stage.

Kate Johnson, a trustee at the Women’s Sports Foundation, emphasizes the importance of properly telling the stories of women athletes to engage viewers. NBC’s coverage of women’s sports should focus on the competitive storylines and rivalries that captivate audiences, rather than superficial narratives. The success of leagues like the WNBA and individual athletes like Caitlin Clark underscores the demand for authentic and compelling sports coverage that showcases the raw competition and talent of women athletes. By highlighting these narratives, broadcasters can tap into the growing interest in women’s sports and elevate the visibility of female athletes on a global platform.

Laurie Hernandez, an Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics, recognizes the contributions of trailblazing athletes in paving the way for gender equality in sports. Tennis and soccer have played a significant role in advancing women’s sports and creating opportunities for female athletes to excel. As a broadcaster and ambassador, Hernandez is excited to see increased coverage and representation of women athletes in the upcoming Olympic Games. Similarly, young athletes like Logan “Logistx” Edra, a B-Girl competing in breaking, are inspired by the achievements of women athletes and see the Olympics as a platform to inspire future generations of female athletes. Representation and visibility play a crucial role in empowering young girls and showcasing the possibilities available to them in the world of sports.
