Two companies in Deira have mysteriously disappeared, leaving behind millions of dirhams worth of goods. Future Star Electromechanical Works and Alpha Star Building Contracting closed their shops after taking tonnes of building materials, cartons of chicken, laptops, cellphones, and cables. The estimated loss from this incident has exceeded Dh12 million. Traders discovered the fraud when post-dated cheques issued by the companies bounced, and they found the offices and warehouses locked with no staff or owners in sight.
Deepti Singh, an Indian businesswoman, suffered a loss of over Dh3.5 million in building materials. She had conducted thorough due diligence before engaging with the companies, visiting their offices, meeting their staff, and reviewing audit reports and bank statements. Despite assurances from Future Star and Alpha Star about their projects in Oman and Abu Dhabi, respectively, the goods vanished overnight, leaving Deepti and other business owners devastated. A WhatsApp group has been formed by affected parties to share information and support each other through this ordeal.
The disappearance of the two companies has left a trail of victims, including Deepti and other business owners who supplied goods to Future Star and Alpha Star. Up to 40 business owners have joined forces to navigate the aftermath of this scam, filing police complaints and facing the challenge of potentially being pursued by creditors if their losses become known. The scam has left many in shock, with one supplier unaware that the company’s license had changed hands recently, indicating a level of sophistication in the operation.
The scam involving Future Star and Alpha Star is not an isolated incident, as similar cases have been reported in the past, with fraudulent companies vanishing with goods worth millions. These incidents highlight the importance of due diligence and caution when engaging with new business partners, especially in the UAE market where such scams have occurred before. Business owners like Deepti and others have been left reeling from the loss, having trusted the companies based on their seemingly legitimate operations and long-standing presence in the market.
The impact of this fraudulent incident goes beyond just the financial losses, as Deepti’s personal story of moving to the UAE for a better future with her family has been derailed by the disappearance of the companies. The emotional toll on business owners who have been blindsided by the scam is significant, with many now having to reassess their plans and potentially make tough decisions like sending family members back home due to financial strain. The sense of betrayal and loss of trust in the business community is palpable as authorities investigate the case and affected individuals try to recover what they can.
As the investigation into the disappearance of Future Star and Alpha Star continues, other business owners who may have been affected by the scam are coming forward with their stories. The ripple effect of such incidents on the wider business community is a stark reminder of the risks involved in commercial transactions, even with seemingly reputable companies. The need for stronger regulatory measures and enforcement to prevent such scams in the future is evident, as business owners seek justice and support in the wake of this devastating experience. The resilience and determination of those affected will be crucial in rebuilding trust and moving forward from this setback.
