Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Al-Khateeb, recently announced that the number of tourists in the kingdom reached an impressive 60 million in the first half of 2024, with a total spending of SR150 billion. Al-Khateeb highlighted the country’s dedication to developing the tourism sector, which currently contributes 3% to Saudi Arabia’s GDP and accounts for 10% of the global economy. In 2023, Saudi Arabia welcomed about 109 million tourists, including 27 million international visitors, placing the country 11th globally in terms of tourist numbers. The tourism growth rate in Saudi Arabia reached 153% compared to 2019, making it one of the fastest-growing countries among the G20 nations.

During a press conference held at the historic Abu Sarrah palaces to unveil details of the Saudi Summer Season 2024, Al-Khateeb emphasized the country’s diverse historical and tourist sites, stating that Saudi Arabia is like a continent waiting to be explored beyond religious and business purposes. The tourism sector currently contributes about 5% to the local economy, with plans to increase this to 10%, equivalent to SR600-700 billion. Al-Khateeb praised the incredible human resources in the kingdom, noting that young men and women will play a crucial role in conveying local culture to future guests, although there is still work to be done to achieve this goal.

The minister stressed the importance of collaboration with relevant entities in the success of the tourism sector, stating that Saudis have proven their excellence in various fields. To empower Saudis in the tourism industry, the ministry has provided 100,000 training courses, increased salaries to SR6,000, and placed 1,500 individuals in leadership positions. Al-Khateeb expressed confidence in the Saudi people and their ability to contribute to the growth and success of the tourism sector in the kingdom. He also highlighted the opportunities for visitors to explore Saudi Arabia’s rich heritage and cultural attractions, beyond what they may typically associate with the country.

As Saudi Arabia continues to expand and develop its tourism sector, the country is poised to become a key player in the global tourism industry. With a growing number of tourists visiting the kingdom each year, there is significant potential for economic growth and job creation in the tourism sector. The government’s commitment to developing tourism infrastructure and empowering local talent is evident in its efforts to provide training and leadership opportunities for Saudis interested in pursuing careers in the industry. As Saudi Arabia opens its doors to visitors from around the world, there is an opportunity for cultural exchange and mutual understanding to flourish, contributing to a more interconnected and prosperous future for the kingdom.

In conclusion, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Al-Khateeb, highlighted the country’s impressive tourism growth and potential during a recent press conference. With a focus on developing the tourism sector and empowering local talent, Saudi Arabia is well-positioned to become a major player in the global tourism industry. As the kingdom continues to welcome millions of visitors each year, there is significant potential for economic growth and job creation in the tourism sector. By leveraging its rich cultural heritage and diverse tourist attractions, Saudi Arabia is poised to attract even more visitors and establish itself as a top destination for travelers from around the world.
