Eng. Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli, the Minister of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, has recently signed a project contract for the construction and design of a regional reference veterinary laboratory in the Riyadh Region. The laboratory, which will cost a total of SR175 million, is set to become a crucial hub for disease diagnosis, vaccine development, and localization in the Middle East. This initiative is part of the Veterinary Vaccines Production and Development Center’s efforts to monitor and control the spread of animal diseases, identify causative agents, and sequence DNA bases.

The primary objective of the laboratory is to conduct specialized research and applied studies that will benefit the animal wealth and health sector in Saudi Arabia. By focusing on developing new vaccines tailored to the Kingdom’s specific local microbial strains, increasing the production of local vaccines, and implementing world-class laboratory practices, the facility aims to strengthen the country’s veterinary vaccine industry. The ministry is committed to monitoring and updating standard disease detection methods in alignment with the World Organization for Animal Health standards, ensuring compliance with quality system requirements.

In addition to its research and vaccine development activities, the laboratory will also serve as a regional reference center, operating at high biosafety levels to provide specialized laboratory tests for a wide range of animal diseases. By conducting research and studies that support the field of animal wealth and health within the Kingdom, the facility is expected to significantly contribute to controlling and eradicating local diseases while protecting the nation’s animal wealth. This strategic initiative represents a significant step forward in the localization of the veterinary vaccine industry in Saudi Arabia.

The establishment of the regional reference veterinary laboratory underscores the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture’s ongoing commitment to developing vaccines from local pathogenic strains that are more effective in eliciting immune responses compared to global strains. By harnessing the capabilities of this state-of-the-art facility, the ministry aims to enhance the Kingdom’s ability to combat animal diseases, support the growth of the local veterinary vaccine industry, and safeguard the nation’s valuable animal wealth. The laboratory’s focus on research, innovation, and compliance with international standards reflects the ministry’s dedication to advancing the field of animal health and welfare in Saudi Arabia.

In conclusion, the construction and design of the regional reference veterinary laboratory in the Riyadh Region represent a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s efforts to strengthen its veterinary vaccine industry, enhance disease control measures, and support the wellbeing of its animal population. With a focus on research, development, and localization, the facility is poised to become a key player in advancing the field of animal health and welfare in Saudi Arabia while contributing to the control and eradication of local diseases. The ministry’s unwavering commitment to high biosafety standards, specialized laboratory testing, and vaccine development underscores its dedication to protecting the nation’s animal wealth and promoting a sustainable and healthy environment for both animals and humans in the Kingdom.
