The CONMEBOL Copa America 2024 Final between Argentina and Colombia was delayed by over 75 minutes in Miami Gardens, Florida, due to chaotic scenes outside the stadium. Fans were kept waiting for hours as tournament organizers halted entry and delayed kick-off after fans rushed the entrance gates, clashing with security. The gates were closed two hours before kick-off, leading to fans needing medical attention for heat exhaustion. Despite the chaos, gates were eventually opened with no ticket checks, allowing fans to flood in.

The Miami Dade Police reported several incidents of unruly behavior from fans trying to access the stadium, leading to ejections and arrests. Fans criticized the lack of organization of the event, with one Argentina supporter likening the treatment of fans to animals. The situation was described as dangerous and chaotic, with fans forcing their way past security staff and rushing into the venue. People were frustrated by the delays in opening the gates and the slow entry process, leading to mayhem and pushing among the crowd.

Copa America organizers emphasized that only ticketed fans would be allowed into the stadium, with unticketed individuals unable to gain entry. This statement was made in response to reports of people attempting to enter the venue without tickets. The chaos at the Copa America final occurred in the context of heightened scrutiny of stadium security following a brawl during the semi-final between Colombia and Uruguay. Uruguayan players clashed with Colombian fans in the stands, citing threats made to their family members after Uruguay’s defeat.

Overall, the scenes outside the stadium ahead of the Copa America final highlighted issues with crowd management and security at the event. The delays and chaotic entry process raised concerns about the safety and well-being of fans, with reports of people needing medical attention due to heat exhaustion. The criticism of the event organization and the comparisons to animals made by fans underscored the frustration and disappointment experienced by attendees. Moving forward, there is a need for improved planning and coordination to ensure the smooth and orderly conduct of major sporting events like the Copa America.
