In Doha, Qatar, serious road accidents resulting in deaths have decreased by more than 32 percent over the past two years due to the efforts of authorities to improve road safety and infrastructure. Data from the National Planning Council (NPC) reveals that 52 people died in road accidents in the first four months of this year, compared to 77 deaths reported in the same period in 2022, marking a significant 32.4 percent decrease. The Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Traffic has been actively working to raise awareness and ensure compliance with traffic rules, including speed limits and the use of seatbelts. Additionally, the construction of modern road infrastructure and an annual vehicle inspection regime have also played a key role in improving road safety indicators in the region.

According to NPC figures, a total of 3,163 traffic accidents were recorded between January and April of this year, with the majority of cases being minor incidents. However, there were 172 major accidents reported during this time frame. The breakdown of accidents per month shows that January saw 843 accidents, February had 754, March saw 804, and April had 762 accidents. During this period, a total of 52 deaths were reported, with 17 occurring in January, 12 in February, 13 in March, and 10 in April. Comparatively, the same period in the previous year saw 3,041 road accidents and 58 deaths, with 179 classified as major accidents and the remainder as minor incidents.

In January 2023, there were 788 accidents reported, while February had 668 accidents, March had 806, and April had 779. In contrast, the same months in 2022 saw 2,904 road accidents and 77 deaths. To enforce road safety rules effectively, the traffic police have implemented measures to monitor seatbelt and mobile phone use violations through surveillance cameras installed along roads and intersections nationwide. These efforts highlight the commitment of authorities in Qatar to improve road safety and reduce the number of road accidents and fatalities.

The decrease in serious road accidents and fatalities in Doha, Qatar can be attributed to the concerted efforts of authorities to enhance road safety and infrastructure. The Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Traffic has been actively working to raise awareness about traffic rules, particularly regarding speed limits and seatbelt usage. The implementation of modern road infrastructure and annual vehicle inspections have also contributed to the improvement in road safety indicators in the region. Despite a total of 3,163 traffic accidents reported between January and April of this year, the majority of these cases were minor, with only 172 classified as major accidents.

The proactive measures taken by the authorities have resulted in a significant decrease in road accidents and fatalities compared to the same period in the previous year. The enforcement of road safety rules through surveillance cameras installed along roads and intersections has helped to monitor violations such as seatbelt and mobile phone use, further contributing to the overall improvement in road safety in Qatar. The data from the National Planning Council (NPC) highlights the progress made in reducing road accidents and deaths, with the number of fatalities decreasing by 32.4 percent in the first four months of this year compared to the same period in 2022. By continuing to prioritize road safety initiatives and enforcement measures, authorities in Doha are working towards creating safer roads for all residents and visitors in the region.
