Qatar reaffirms support for UNRWA in providing humanitarian aid in Gaza, recognizing the vital role played by the agency in alleviating the suffering of Palestinian refugees. The Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations praised the efforts of UNRWA staff, led by Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, during a meeting at the UN headquarters in New York.
The pledging conference, held under exceptional circumstances exacerbated by the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza, highlighted the urgent need for a massive humanitarian response. Qatar welcomed the findings of an independent review group that cleared UNRWA of allegations, and commended countries that have increased financial contributions to the agency.
Qatar’s continued support for UNRWA was reiterated, with the country announcing an additional $25 million contribution in May to support the agency’s core resources for 2024. This funding is in addition to the $18 million provided in December 2023 for the same purpose, reflecting Qatar’s policy of solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The Permanent Representative affirmed Qatar’s commitment to working closely with the UNRWA Commissioner-General to ensure continued efforts to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian refugees. Qatar has consistently provided various forms of humanitarian, financial, and in-kind support to the Palestinian people, demonstrating a steadfast commitment to their well-being.
Following the UNRWA Pledging Conference, the group expressed solidarity and full support for the agency’s work, recognizing its indispensable role in providing humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza. Qatar’s reaffirmation of support for UNRWA underscores the country’s commitment to humanitarian efforts for Palestinian refugees and its dedication to alleviating their suffering.
