Dubai Police recently revealed that they have detected sixteen synthetic drugs through extensive research and laboratory analyses in the past year. These synthetic drugs have properties similar to narcotics but with slightly altered chemical structures, often to evade restrictions. Major General Ahmed Thani Bin Ghalitha Al Muhairi, the Director of the General Department of Forensic Evidence and Criminology, disclosed that the department handled over 58,000 examination requests in 2023, not only related to criminal activities but also other cases reported to authorities.

During a press conference, senior officers from the General Department of Criminal Evidence and Criminology shared their accomplishments. Dr Mohammed Ali Al Marri, a leading expert in Dubai Police, spoke about the establishment of the Centre for Genomic Research within the General Department of Criminal Evidence and Criminology. This center is the first in the Arab world to apply genetic identification in DNA, enhancing the ability to identify individuals accurately, particularly in complex criminal cases. The centre represents a significant milestone for the institute, providing them with the ability to study complete genomic data of human and non-human samples.

Dr Al Marri also mentioned that 10 experts from the department flew to Libya to aid in identifying victims of a natural disaster. Dr Younis, another expert from Dubai Police, highlighted the vital role of the crime scene management team in unraveling complex cases within and beyond the Emirate. The team’s expertise in primary inspection, conceptualization, and detection has led to positive outcomes, solidifying Dubai Police’s reputation as a world-class law enforcement agency. The department applies international work manuals in conducting investigations, covering various areas like collecting human remains, bloodstain pattern analysis, underwater crime scene investigations, forensic entomology, criminal profiling, and facial reconstruction technology.

The General Department of Forensic Evidence and Criminology emphasized how they apply international standards to their investigations, ensuring thorough and accurate analysis to solve complex cases. Major General Ahmed Thani Bin Ghalitha Al Muhairi noted that while many cases were from Dubai, around 2 percent came from other Emirates, showing the widespread reach and impact of their work. During the press conference, the department also highlighted the success of the Centre for Genomic Research in advancing forensic investigations and enhancing the ability to trace biological materials back to their origins with greater accuracy.

Overall, the General Department of Forensic Evidence and Criminology’s dedication to utilizing cutting-edge technology and techniques in their investigations has allowed them to make significant strides in the field of forensic analysis and crime-solving. Their commitment to staying at the forefront of innovation and international standards ensures that they can effectively tackle complex criminal cases and provide justice for victims. With their expertise in various forensic disciplines and a team of highly skilled professionals, Dubai Police continue to establish themselves as a leader in law enforcement not only in the region but also on a global scale.
