With the rise of online platforms, people are increasingly turning to the internet for health-related information and advice. A recent study conducted by researchers at Khalifa University in the UAE revealed that approximately 40 per cent of YouTube users in the country rely on health-related content (HRC) on the platform before making decisions about consulting a medical professional or adopting specific health practices. The study, which surveyed 3,000 YouTube users, found that 87 per cent of them engaged with HRC, with exercise and bodybuilding videos being particularly popular.
One Dubai resident, Jill Dayley, shared her experience of using YouTube to determine whether she should seek medical help, citing the difficulty of securing a consultation or basic check-up in the UK. Similarly, Mia Nixon highlighted the convenience of accessing multiple medical opinions on YouTube compared to relying solely on one doctor’s advice. However, Dr. Alaa Zedan, a specialist in Internal Medicine at Burjeel Hospital Dubai, warned about the varying quality and reliability of health information on YouTube.
Dr. Zedan emphasized the potential risks of relying on YouTube for medical advice, as users may choose not to consult a doctor even when professional medical attention is necessary. Despite the increasing trend of seeking online professional advice, medical professionals stress the importance of consulting trained health professionals for accurate and reliable information. The study’s focus on a user-centric approach highlights the generally positive attitude among respondents towards using YouTube for health-related advice.
The study concluded that YouTube serves not only as a source of health information but also as a decision-making tool for individuals. Considering the significant impact on users’ health decisions, follow-up studies are needed to gain further insights into decision-making behaviors and how users assess their choices in retrospect. As more people turn to online platforms for health advice, it is crucial to balance the convenience of accessing information online with the importance of consulting qualified healthcare professionals for accurate and safe medical guidance.
