England’s forward #19 Ollie Watkins scored a late goal to lift England past the Netherlands in the Euro 2024 semi-final, setting up a clash with Spain in the final. With the Dutch taking the lead early through Xavi Simons, England captain Harry Kane equalized from the penalty spot. Watkins then secured the win in stoppage time, sealing the Three Lions’ path to their second consecutive European Championship final.

Gareth Southgate’s England side faced a scare as they fell behind to the Dutch early on, but Kane’s penalty quickly brought them back into the game. The thrilling finish saw Watkins stepping up with a decisive strike to secure the victory and a place in the final. Despite not delivering their best performances, England finds themselves in a position to claim their first major trophy since 1966, provided they can outdo an impressive Spanish team in the final.

The Netherlands, hopeful of replicating their 1988 Euro triumph, saw their dreams dashed by Watkins’ late winner. With star players like Marco van Basten and Ruud Gullit, the current Dutch side lacked the edge needed to progress to the final. Spain, who defeated France in the semi-finals, provided a tough challenge for England in the final, having an extra day to prepare for the showdown.

In a game marked by drama, Simons’ early goal set the tone for an intense encounter between the two sides. Kane’s penalty and Watkins’ late strike compounded the Netherlands’ disappointment as they missed out on a chance to advance to the final. The physicality of the Dutch side was evident, but England’s resilience ultimately saw them through thanks to Watkins’ heroics.

England had faced challenges en route to the semi-finals, needing extra time to overcome opponents in their previous matches. The return of key players like Guehi bolstered their defense, while the Dutch opted for Malen upfront to add firepower. Despite the thrilling encounter, both teams displayed determination and grit, with England prevailing in a nerve-wracking finish that left Dutch fans heartbroken.

As England prepares to face off against Spain in the final, the stage is set for a gripping showdown between two formidable European teams. Southgate’s squad will need to elevate their performance to overcome a talented Spanish side and clinch the Euro 2024 title. With Watkins’ late heroics propelling them to the final, England will be looking to seize the opportunity and make history by lifting the European Championship trophy.
