In an effort to protect children from exploitation and cyber extortion, the Public Prosecution in Bahrain is launching a nationwide campaign called “Protection” on July 10th. This initiative brings together various government entities, including the Ministry of Interior, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs, and Waqf, Ministry of Information, and Ministry of Education, with the goal of educating the public about online risks and providing the necessary tools to prevent these crimes.

Mohammed Buhiji, Deputy Chief of the Family and Children’s Prosecution, highlights the increasing threat of cyber exploitation and blackmail targeting children in today’s digital age. He emphasizes the urgency of taking action to protect children from these crimes, which can have a negative impact on their well-being and development. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the nature of cyber exploitation, which involves manipulating children through technology for sexual, financial, or social gain, as well as blackmailing them for money or material benefits.

The psychological impact of cyber exploitation on children’s mental health and personal development is a major concern addressed by Buhiji. He also mentions Bahraini legislation such as the Restorative Justice Law for Children, which provides a legal framework for intervention and protection in cases of online attacks against children. By emphasizing the need for collaboration between government agencies and civil society organizations, the campaign aims to inform children and parents about online risks and safe practices through educational and training programs.

Encouraging parents to monitor their children’s online activities and maintain open communication is a key aspect of the campaign’s strategy. By fostering a collaborative approach between parents and children, the campaign aims to create a secure digital environment where children can thrive without fear of exploitation or cyber extortion. Through joint efforts and awareness-raising initiatives, the campaign seeks to empower children and parents to navigate the online world safely and protect themselves from potential threats.

The “Protection” campaign is a significant step towards safeguarding children in the digital age. By providing educational resources, raising awareness, and promoting collaboration, the campaign aims to equip children with the necessary skills to stay safe online and prevent exploitation and cyber extortion. With a focus on prevention and intervention, the campaign underscores the importance of protecting children from online threats and creating a secure environment for their growth and development.
