Air Kerala services are set to be launched soon in the state, providing economical air travel options for Indian expats. The low-cost airline, powered by Dubai-based businessmen Afi Ahmed and Ayub Kallada, recently received the initial no-objection certificate (NOC) from India’s civil aviation ministry. The airline, registered under the name Zettfly Aviation, has permission to operate scheduled commuter air transport services for three years. This marks a significant milestone for the first regional airline of Kerala, India’s southernmost state.
Afi Ahmed, the founder of agency Smart Travels, played a crucial role in reviving the Air Kerala project by acquiring the domain name airkerala.com last year. With the NOC granted, the airline now needs to undertake months of groundwork before launching its flights. The next steps involve acquiring aircraft and obtaining the Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) to meet all safety and operational standards set by aviation authorities.
The airline plans to start operations with three ATR 72-600 aircraft, with options being explored in both the leasing market and direct procurement from manufacturers. The board of Zettfly Aviation consists of Afi Ahmed, Ayub Kallada, and Kanika Goyal, all with extensive experience in the aviation industry. Initially focusing on regional connectivity, the airline aims to connect Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities with Tier 1 and metro airports to enhance accessibility and convenience for travelers.
Once operations are successfully established regionally, Air Kerala plans to expand into international flights as part of its future operations. With an initial investment of approximately Dh110 million, the airline intends to promote tourism and trade in Kerala while bringing in job opportunities for at least 350 individuals in the city of Kochi. The long-term goal includes offering affordable travel for expats and introducing international flights, with Dubai being one of the first destinations.
The establishment of Air Kerala marks a significant achievement for the UAE entrepreneurs behind the project, reflecting years of dedication and hard work to make the regional airline a reality. As the airline progresses through the necessary steps for launch, the focus remains on meeting regulatory requirements, acquiring a suitable fleet of aircraft, and enhancing connectivity for travelers across different regions. With plans for international expansion and job creation on the horizon, Air Kerala is poised to make a positive impact on air travel within and beyond India.
