The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation recently disclosed that there are approximately 533,000 people in Saudi Arabia who wish to donate their organs after death. This initiative aims to save the lives of patients in need, alleviate their suffering, and offer them hope for a better quality of life. The center is actively promoting awareness and interest in organ donation, with the goal of enhancing access to transplantation services and improving the overall well-being of a larger number of patients. Riyadh emerges as the leader in terms of the number of individuals willing to donate organs after passing away, with around 142,000 donors, followed by Makkah with approximately 115,000 donors. On the other hand, Najran has the lowest number of potential donors, with only about 1,500 individuals expressing their willingness to donate.
Dr. Talal Al-Goufi, the head of the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation, highlighted the challenges faced in convincing some families to agree to organ donation following the death of a loved one. In fact, statistics reveal that up to 70% of families interviewed by the medical team reject the concept of organ donation. Despite these obstacles, the center has made significant progress in the field of organ transplantation since its inception until the end of 2023. Over 6,000 organs have been transplanted from deceased donors to beneficiaries, demonstrating the positive impact of organ donation on the lives of patients in need. The central region stands out as the leader in organ transplantation in Saudi Arabia, with Dammam and Jeddah following closely behind. Additionally, there are 26 centers across the country that offer private medical services for organ transplantation, signifying the growing importance of this field in Saudi healthcare.
In the past year, the total number of organs transplanted, both from living and deceased donors, surpassed 2,091. Moreover, more than 2,037 patients received organ transplants from both living and deceased donors in 2023, with over 1,662 organs coming from living donors. These figures underscore the growing success and acceptance of organ donation and transplantation in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation is also actively involved in promoting scientific research and development programs to further advancements in the field of organ donation and transplantation, not only within the region but also on a global scale. Through research and innovation, the center aims to enhance the effectiveness and accessibility of organ transplantation services, ultimately benefiting a larger number of patients in need.
The positive momentum surrounding organ donation in Saudi Arabia is a testament to the growing awareness and acceptance of this life-saving practice within the community. By encouraging more individuals to pledge their organs after death, the country is taking significant strides towards saving lives, reducing suffering, and offering hope to those in need of organ transplants. The efforts of the Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation, led by Dr. Talal Al-Goufi, have played a crucial role in driving this movement forward and addressing the challenges associated with organ donation. As the number of organ donors continues to rise across different regions of Saudi Arabia, the impact of these donations on improving the quality of life for patients awaiting transplants is becoming increasingly evident. With ongoing support for research and development initiatives, the future of organ donation and transplantation in Saudi Arabia looks promising, with the potential to save even more lives and make a lasting impact on the healthcare landscape of the country.
