The Copa America quarter-final match between Uruguay and Brazil ended in a penalty shoot-out, with Uruguay emerging victorious with a 4-2 score. The game was marred by rough play and 41 fouls, with Uruguay finishing with ten men after Nahitan Nandez was sent off in the 74th minute. Despite this setback, Uruguay managed to secure their spot in the semi-finals, where they will face Colombia in Charlotte, North Carolina. Colombia, who are currently unbeaten in 27 games, defeated Panama 5-0 in their quarter-final match.

On the other side of the bracket, world champions Argentina will face surprise package Canada in the semi-final match to be held in New Jersey. Brazil, a five-time world champion, had a disappointing exit from the tournament, as they never found their rhythm and were unable to secure a spot in the semi-finals. The loss highlights the work that needs to be done by coach Dorival Junior’s team in order to compete for the title in the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

The match between Uruguay and Brazil was a physical and tense affair, with both teams struggling to find their best form on a poor quality playing field. Uruguay had a clear opportunity to score in the 35th minute, but Brazil’s goalkeeper Sergio Rochet made a crucial save. The game saw Uruguay harrying Brazil in midfield and disrupting their play with fouls. Brazil relied heavily on long balls forward, but their efforts were thwarted by Uruguay’s strong defensive play.

In the penalty shoot-out, Uruguay showed composure and determination, with Federico Valverde scoring the first spot-kick and Eder Militao missing for Brazil. Despite Brazil’s efforts to stay in the game with a goal from substitute Gabriel Martinelli, Uruguay sealed the victory with a decisive kick from midfielder Manuel Ugarte. Coach Bielsa praised his team’s performance and highlighted their defensive resilience in the match.

As Brazil reflects on their exit from the tournament, coach Dorival Junior emphasized the need for patience and hard work in the coming years leading up to the 2026 World Cup. With two years of preparation ahead, Brazil will focus on qualifying for the World Cup and improving their performance in future tournaments. The Copa America final is set to take place in Miami on July 14, where the top teams will compete for the championship title.
