With temperatures soaring above 50℃ in the last week of June, residents working outside in the UAE are facing extreme heat. To educate workers about the dangers of heat exhaustion, an initiative was launched where meals, gifts, sanitary tools, water, and juice were distributed to around 600 workers in the Hamriya area in Sharjah. Additionally, medical examinations were conducted for these workers by the Emirates Red Crescent Authority – Sharjah Centre. This initiative is set to continue until the end of July in all regions of the emirate.

In collaboration with the Dubai Health Authority and Noor Dubai Foundation, the Dubai Centre of Emirates Red Crescent also organized a ‘health day’ for workers in their accommodations. During this event, workers underwent medical examinations and received gifts of appreciation for their hard work. The aim of these initiatives is to reduce heat-related illnesses and ensure the well-being of workers in the extreme summer heat.

To combat the effects of the scorching summer temperatures, the UAE has implemented a midday break policy from June 15 to September 15. This policy prohibits work under direct sunlight and in open-air areas between 12.30pm and 3.00pm. Companies that do not comply with the midday break regulations will face fines of Dh5,000 per employee, with penalties escalating to Dh50,000 for multiple employees working during the break.

As the UAE braces for a record-breaking heatwave this year, various initiatives have been put in place to support workers. These initiatives include the distribution of free ice cream and juices, the provision of air-conditioned rest stations, and the mandatory midday break policy. These measures are crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of workers who are exposed to extreme heat conditions during the summer months. In addition to the initiatives already in place, the Emirates Red Crescent Authority and other organizations are working tirelessly to support and protect workers from the adverse effects of the summer heat. By conducting medical examinations, distributing essential items, and organizing health days, these organizations are playing a vital role in safeguarding the health and safety of workers in the UAE.

With the heatwave expected to intensify in the coming weeks, it is essential for companies and organizations to prioritize the well-being of their employees. By adhering to the midday break policy, providing necessary support and resources, and implementing safety measures, employers can help mitigate the risks associated with working in extreme heat. It is crucial for all stakeholders to work together to ensure the health and safety of workers during the summer months in the UAE.
