With the summer season in full swing, residents in the UAE are advised to prepare for soaring temperatures that are expected to peak in the middle of July. The mercury has already crossed the 50°C mark, and experts predict even warmer temperatures as the month progresses. Khadijah Ahmad, operations manager at the Dubai Astronomy Group, stated that this year’s heat wave is more severe than usual, breaking records in terms of both temperature and duration. The extreme heat wave is caused by high-pressure systems trapping warm air, combined with the lack of clouds and the urban heat effect from buildings.

Climate change also plays a role in making these extreme weather events more common and intense, according to Ahmad. While heat waves can generally be predicted with reasonable accuracy one to two weeks in advance, the exact intensity and duration can be harder to pinpoint until closer to the occurrence. The UAE group ‘Storm Centre’ highlighted that this summer is characterized by a significant increase in temperatures and humidity, making it one of the hottest times of the year, lasting for approximately 40 days. The peak intensity of the warm period starts around mid-July and continues until the second or third week of August, accompanied by northwestern winds known locally as the Al-Bawareh winds.

During times of extreme heat, it is crucial to take precautions to stay safe. Dr. Farhan M. Asrar, a Canadian Public Health and Family Physician at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, advises staying hydrated, wearing appropriate clothing, avoiding direct sunlight, using sunscreen, consuming items that help stay cool, and reducing outdoor activities during the hottest times of the day. With medical professionals sharing important tips for staying safe in extreme heat conditions, residents can protect themselves from heat-related illnesses and stay healthy during the summer months.

As the relentless heat wave continues to impact the UAE, it is essential for residents to stay informed and prepared for the peak temperatures expected in the coming weeks. With advancements in meteorological technology and modeling, experts can predict heat waves with reasonable accuracy, helping residents plan and take necessary precautions to stay safe. By following the advice of medical professionals and taking steps to stay cool and hydrated, individuals can navigate the extreme heat and enjoy the summer season without compromising their health.

The role of climate change in exacerbating heat waves cannot be overlooked, as it contributes to making these extreme weather events more common and intense. As temperatures continue to rise and the duration of heat waves increases, it is crucial for individuals to adapt to changing weather patterns and take proactive measures to mitigate the impact of extreme heat on their health and well-being. By staying informed, prepared, and taking steps to stay safe during the hottest times of the year, residents can navigate the challenges of summer in the UAE and enjoy the season while prioritizing their health and safety.
