Planning a wedding is a significant event in any young couple’s life, and for young Emiratis, it is no different. The Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi recently launched the Medeem Model for Women’s Weddings, aiming to encourage a new wave of authentic marriage celebrations while promoting moderation and humility. This initiative focuses on creating stable marriages and families while also educating the youth on financial planning. The Medeem weddings are a blend of traditional Emirati culture and modern elements, allowing couples to express their personal taste without going overboard.
Chairman of DCD – Abu Dhabi, Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, emphasized that the Medeem Model integrates traditions and originality from past weddings with the elegance of modern ceremonies. The emphasis is on avoiding extravagance that can lead to financial burdens and potentially impact the couple’s happiness and future stability. Al Khaili highlighted that extravagant weddings often result in excessive spending and that young people should be allowed to focus on building a life filled with affection, love, and blessings.
To benefit from the Medeem Model for Women’s Weddings, prospective couples must both be UAE nationals, with the husband being a citizen or resident of Abu Dhabi. They are also required to complete a premarital program offered by the Medeem Centre for Family Flourishing, after which they will receive a Medeem benefits card. This initiative is aligned with the Abu Dhabi Family Wellbeing Strategy, launched last year, which focuses on providing dedicated support functions for young individuals. The Medeem initiative aims to equip young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to build a strong foundation for their families.
