The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Doha has recently announced a significant advancement in their oversight of facilities using radioactive materials. This move comes as part of a cooperation between the ministry and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to ensure that radiation levels remain within safe limits. The ministry has developed new, advanced radiation detection devices to enhance their capabilities in monitoring radiation safety and security. These devices can detect the location of radioactive materials, as well as the quality and quantity of radiation emitted by them using advanced measurement techniques.

The development of these new devices demonstrates the ministry’s commitment to staying up-to-date with the latest technical advancements in radiation monitoring. By modernizing their monitoring methods, they can better ensure the safety of facilities using radioactive materials in medical, industrial, and research settings. This is in line with the legal provisions outlined in Law No. 31 of 2002 on radiation protection and its executive regulations. The ministry’s Radiation Control Department has strengthened its oversight to guarantee that facilities are adhering to these regulations and ensuring the safe use of radioactive materials.

The cooperation between the MoECC and the IAEA is part of a broader technical cooperation agreement between the State of Qatar and the IAEA, signed in 2022 and running until 2027. This agreement includes various joint programs aimed at enhancing technical capabilities, exchanging experiences, and calibrating radiation detection and monitoring equipment. The partnership with the IAEA will further support the ministry’s efforts to monitor and regulate the use of radioactive materials in various peaceful applications, ranging from nuclear energy in medicine to agriculture, industry, and research.

As part of their intensified oversight, the Radiation Control Department at the MoECC is working diligently to monitor and regulate the use of radioactive materials and radiation-emitting devices across various sectors. By ensuring that facilities in medicine, agriculture, industry, and research comply with safety regulations, the ministry is taking proactive steps to protect public health and safety. The department’s efforts are crucial in upholding the principles of radiation protection and ensuring that facilities using radioactive materials operate safely and responsibly.

By enhancing their capabilities in radiation detection and monitoring, the MoECC is better equipped to address potential risks associated with the use of radioactive materials. Through their collaboration with the IAEA and commitment to continuous improvement, the ministry is working to strengthen radiation safety and security measures in the State of Qatar. This partnership not only benefits the ministry in terms of technical support and expertise but also underscores the government’s dedication to ensuring the safe and responsible use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes within the country.

Ultimately, the MoECC’s efforts to strengthen their oversight of facilities using radioactive materials are essential for maintaining public health and safety. With the development of advanced radiation detection devices and cooperation with the IAEA, the ministry is making significant strides in modernizing their monitoring methods and enhancing radiation safety and security measures. By prioritizing compliance with legal regulations and ensuring the safe use of radioactive materials in various sectors, the ministry is playing a crucial role in promoting responsible practices and protecting the well-being of the population in Qatar.
