Gen Z professionals in the UAE are showing a strong interest in green jobs that contribute to environmental preservation, according to a new LinkedIn study. However, only three out of 10 of these individuals have a good awareness of the available green roles. The research also revealed that 63 per cent believe there is a general lack of green jobs in the labor market, and only 16 per cent feel there are enough training opportunities to help them acquire the necessary skills to compete for these roles.
Ali Matar, growth markets leader for EMEA at LinkedIn, emphasized the importance of employers listening more closely to Gen Z professionals, as they are expected to represent over a quarter of the international labor force by 2025. The study found that the majority of Gen Z individuals interested in pursuing green jobs in the next five years are driven by a desire to protect the environment, see good opportunities in green jobs, and anticipate better financial compensation.
Data from LinkedIn indicates that the UAE ranks second in the MENA region in terms of average green talent concentration across all generations. However, Gen Z professionals are underrepresented in having green skills compared to other cohorts. While Millennials make up 65 per cent of green-skilled professionals in the UAE, only 15 per cent come from Gen Z. Additionally, most Gen Z individuals are concerned about the effects of climate change, with many experiencing negative impacts on their mental health, known as “eco-anxiety.”
A significant portion of Gen Z respondents in the study have already made changes in their daily lives to reduce their carbon footprint, with many now considering the environment in their daily decision-making processes. Matar suggests that young workers looking to enter green jobs should focus on strengthening their digital and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) skills to increase their chances of transitioning successfully into these roles.Overall, the study highlights the growing demand for green jobs among Gen Z professionals in the UAE and the importance of providing them with the necessary skills and opportunities to pursue careers in environmental sustainability. Employers and decision-makers are encouraged to align their policies and practices with the values of this generation, who are increasingly aware of their role in addressing environmental issues. By investing in green skills development and creating more training opportunities, the UAE can further support the transition to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious workforce.
