Hungary’s Orban advocates for ceasefire agreement during visit to Kyiv

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently visited Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, for the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. During his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Orban emphasized the importance of ending the war and suggested an immediate cease-fire. Despite his close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Orban expressed a desire to improve relations with Ukraine and move past previous disputes.

Orban’s visit marked a significant shift in Hungary’s approach to the conflict in Ukraine. While in the past, Hungary has been criticized for blocking EU efforts to support Ukraine and sanction Russia, Orban now appears open to a new phase of bilateral relations. He stressed the need for peace negotiations and humanitarian support for Ukrainian refugees. Additionally, Orban expressed a willingness to play a role in organizing a peace summit similar to the one held in Switzerland last month.

As Hungary has taken over the six-month rotating presidency of the EU, Orban’s visit to Kyiv was seen as an opportunity to demonstrate the country’s commitment to supporting Ukraine. Despite concerns about Hungary’s democratic record, Hungarian officials have promised to act as “honest brokers” during their EU presidency. Orban acknowledged the impact of the war on European security and emphasized the importance of peace for the entire continent.

Orban’s visit to Kyiv also highlighted his efforts to expand his influence in European politics. He recently met with leaders of far-right parties in Austria and the Czech Republic to announce the formation of a new nationalist alliance called “Patriots for Europe.” The alliance aims to become the largest right-wing group in the European Parliament, requiring support from lawmakers in multiple EU countries. While right-wing nationalist parties have gained strength in recent European elections, differences over the war in Ukraine and relations with Russia have hindered deeper alliances.

Despite previous tensions between Hungary and Ukraine, Orban’s visit to Kyiv signals a potential shift towards improved relations and cooperation. By advocating for peace negotiations, supporting Ukrainian refugees, and offering to help organize a peace summit, Orban has taken steps to demonstrate Hungary’s commitment to ending the conflict in Ukraine. As Hungary assumes the EU presidency, Orban’s visit underscores the country’s willingness to engage with other European leaders and address pressing security challenges on the continent.
