A group of Grade 10 students in Dubai have developed a tool called Aquatral to combat ocean acidification and create a safer environment for marine life. The rising carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have been causing changes in acidity levels in the ocean, impacting ecosystems underwater. The students at GEMS New Millennium School NMS took it upon themselves to address this issue and created a device that can balance out acidity in the ocean.
Aquatral carefully adds base solutions to the ocean waters to neutralize acidity levels. The pH sensors in the device ensure that only specific levels of base are dispensed, preventing excess addition that could result in higher pH levels. By targeting the harmful effects of ocean acidification, Aquatral becomes a tool to make marine ecosystems stronger and more resilient in the face of environmental changes. This device not only benefits marine life but also has the potential to positively impact coastal communities, fisheries, and businesses connected to the sea.
By addressing ocean acidification, the Aquatral device aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6 and 13. SDG 6 focuses on clean water and sanitation, preserving marine ecosystems, agriculture, and water quality. Additionally, by curbing the adverse effects of acidification on marine life, the device indirectly supports SDG 13, which aims at climate action.
