Sharjah has introduced a new Communication Technologies Free Zone (Comtech) with the aim to enhance the emirate’s position in communication technologies and contribute to its economic development. This free zone, located in the city of Kalba, will serve as a hub for investments, partnerships, and skilled professionals in communication technologies. The zone aims to support and promote the communication technology sector to elevate Sharjah’s global standing in this field and create a conducive environment for investing in technological transformation, artificial intelligence, and future technologies.

The establishment of Sharjah Communication Technologies Free Zone is a significant step towards developing national talent in science and attracting international professionals working in communication technologies. The zone has the authority to formulate legislation, policies, and strategic plans in line with approved standards and practices, as well as to grant licenses to companies interested in engaging in marine and land cable extensions related to communication technologies. It also aims to establish data centers for companies operating within the region and provide technical, administrative, and skilled personnel to companies upon request.

Under the supervision of the Chairman of the Sharjah Communications Technologies Free Zone, a director is appointed to oversee the operations of the zone and is supported by an adequate number of employees and experts. The director has the authority to formulate a comprehensive policy for the zone, oversee the execution of programs and projects, and develop plans for the growth of work in the zone. Additionally, the director is responsible for drafting organizational, administrative, and financial regulations, monitoring the progress of work, and supervising the disbursements from the region’s budget.

The zone is mandated to execute contracts, agreements, memorandums of understanding, and partnerships on its behalf, as well as undertake all legal actions required for it to carry out its operations within the confines permitted by law. It is also required to coordinate with federal and local authorities/entities, institutions, and other free zones to accomplish its established objectives. Regular reports on the zone’s activities are to be submitted to the president, and the zone’s organizational structure will be issued by Emiri Decree upon the president’s proposal and the Council’s approval.

In terms of financial resources, the yearly budget, exemptions, inspection powers, exemption from laws, fees, fines, non-accountability for debt, as well as enforcement and publication, the Decree includes provisions to ensure the smooth functioning of the Communication Technologies Free Zone. This new free zone is expected to play a crucial role in supporting the growth of the communication technology sector in Sharjah and attracting investments and skilled professionals to the emirate. With its focus on technology transformation and innovation, the Comtech Free Zone sets the stage for Sharjah to become a leading destination for communication technologies.
