Saudi Arabia ranked third globally and second in the Arab world in terms of countries sending international remittances during the year 2023. The total outward remittances from the country amounted to nearly SR 144 billion ($38.4 billion) during the last year. Foreign remittances are the money that immigrants send directly to their families or communities in their country of origin around the world. According to a recent report by the World Bank titled “Migration and Development Brief,” the United States of America topped the list of countries sending international remittances, with total external remittance flows reaching about $85.8 billion during the year 2023. The United Arab Emirates came in second place globally and first in the Arab world, with total remittances amounting to about $38.5 billion, while Kuwait ranked tenth globally and third in the Arab world.

The report also stated that external remittances from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries recorded a decrease of 13 percent during the year 2023 compared to the year 2022. This decline comes after an upward trend from 2010 to 2019, with some fluctuations, and then a decline after 2019. Qatar ranked fourth in the Arab world after Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait with about $11.8 billion, followed by Bahrain with about $2.7 billion. India topped the list of countries receiving the most international remittances in 2023, with a value of $119.5 billion, followed by Mexico with $66.2 billion, and China with about $49.5 billion. The World Bank also revealed in its report that remittance flows to the Middle East and North Africa region posted a drop of 15 percent to reach $55 billion in 2023, primarily due to the sharp decline witnessed in flows to Egypt.

The importance of remittances cannot be understated, as they play a crucial role in supporting families and communities in the country of origin of the immigrants. The money sent back home can be used for various purposes such as education, healthcare, and general living expenses. It also helps to alleviate poverty and improve the overall standard of living for the recipients. In the case of Saudi Arabia, the significant amount of remittances sent out of the country highlights the important role that immigrants play in the economy and the support they provide to their families back home.

The decrease in external remittances from GCC countries in 2023 compared to the previous year may be attributed to various factors such as economic challenges, changing immigration policies, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. These factors could have resulted in a decrease in the income of immigrants, leading to a reduction in the amount of money they are able to send to their families. Additionally, the decline in remittance flows to the Middle East and North Africa region, particularly to Egypt, could be a cause for concern and may require further investigation to address any underlying issues that may be affecting the flow of funds.

As Saudi Arabia continues to strengthen its economy and diversify its sources of revenue, it is essential to consider the impact of remittances on the overall financial landscape of the country. The government may need to implement policies and initiatives that support both the immigrants sending remittances and the recipients back home to ensure the efficient flow of funds and the sustainable development of communities. This may involve creating more opportunities for immigrants to earn income and encouraging them to invest in projects that benefit their families and the local economy.

In conclusion, the ranking of Saudi Arabia as one of the top countries sending international remittances in 2023 highlights the significant contributions of immigrants to the economy and the well-being of their families. While the decrease in remittance flows from GCC countries and the Middle East and North Africa region may raise concerns, it also presents an opportunity to review current policies and practices to address any challenges that may be impeding the flow of funds. By recognizing the importance of remittances and working towards enhancing the remittance ecosystem, Saudi Arabia can further support its immigrant population and contribute to the development of both local and global communities.
