Germany secured their first knockout victory at a major tournament in eight years with a spectacular performance against Denmark at Euro 2024. Coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed that the win will raise fans’ expectations of the team’s return to their former glory, but the players do not feel the pressure. In a game that saw Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala scoring goals in the second half, the elements and the resilience of the Danish side made the match a challenging one for Germany.

Nagelsmann praised his team’s exceptional start in the first 20 minutes, describing it as the best of the entire tournament. Despite the pressure and expectations from fans, the coach mentioned that the players are seasoned in handling such situations, and playing under pressure is considered a privilege. Germany’s victory was well-deserved, with opportunities to score more goals, thwarted by the excellent saves of Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and missed chances in front of the goal.

Joachim Andersen, the Danish defender, had a crucial role in the match, with a disallowed goal followed by conceding a penalty that led to Germany taking the lead. Nagelsmann acknowledged that the offside call against Andersen was close, and while it may have been harsh, it adhered to the rules. Despite Denmark’s frustration over the VAR decisions, Germany emerged victorious, showcasing dominance throughout the game.

Germany could have scored more goals, with Florian Wirtz’s late effort being ruled out for offside and Schmeichel denying Havertz from close range. Defender Antonio Rudiger, named the player of the match, expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting that they were dominant from the start. However, the criticism remained on the missed chances that could have extended the lead further against Denmark.

Denmark’s coach, Kasper Hjulmand, voiced his discontent with the VAR decisions that went against his team, citing the narrow margin of offside in Andersen’s disallowed goal and the penalty decision. Hjulmand criticized the strict application of handball rules, emphasizing that defenders cannot be expected to run without their arms. Despite the contentious decisions, Germany’s victory in the quarterfinals was a testament to their resilience and quality on the field, setting high expectations for their future performances in Euro 2024.
