Qatar’s commitment to supporting the United Nations and addressing humanitarian needs globally was reaffirmed by Her Excellency Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the UN. In her statement at the UN Economic and Social Council, she highlighted the increasing humanitarian demands worldwide and the challenges in responding to these needs. She emphasized the importance of delivering humanitarian and medical assistance to crisis regions affected by natural disasters or armed conflicts, as access to basic survival necessities is a fundamental human right.

One of the humanitarian crises mentioned by Her Excellency was the ongoing situation in Gaza, where civilians are facing the consequences of Israeli aggression. Qatar has provided various forms of humanitarian aid to those affected, including food, shelter supplies, medical supplies, and evacuation operations. An initial $50 million humanitarian aid package has been pledged by Qatar to support refugees and displaced persons following the Israeli assault on Gaza.

Qatar’s efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan were also highlighted by Her Excellency. The focus of Qatar’s humanitarian and developmental assistance in Afghanistan includes projects in education, healthcare, shelter, livelihood, food security, agriculture, and medical supplies. Additionally, Qatar hosted the third Doha meeting of Special Envoys for Afghanistan in partnership with the UN to discuss humanitarian and developmental challenges in the country.

In response to the humanitarian crisis faced by the Sudanese people, Her Excellency mentioned Qatar’s operation of an air bridge to deliver vital humanitarian aid, including food, health, and shelter supplies. This aid was provided by humanitarian organizations in Qatar, such as the Qatar Red Crescent Society and Qatar Charity, in partnership with the Qatar Fund for Development. Qatar remains committed to supporting Sudan and other countries facing humanitarian challenges.

Overall, Qatar’s unwavering commitment to supporting the United Nations and addressing humanitarian needs worldwide was evident in Her Excellency’s statement at the UN Economic and Social Council. Qatar continues to be a reliable and active partner in delivering humanitarian and medical assistance to crisis regions, including Gaza, Afghanistan, and Sudan. By providing vital aid and partnering with humanitarian organizations, Qatar is making a difference in the lives of those affected by humanitarian crises around the globe.
