The Ibri III Solar PV project in Oman has received interest from nine international companies in the competitive tender process. The project, estimated to cost OMR 155 million, is part of the Omani government’s efforts to diversify energy resources and meet the growing demand for electricity. The prequalified companies include Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), ACWA Power, Jinko Power, Sembcorp Utilities, TotalEnergies Renewables, and others. The project follows the successful precedent of the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model established in Oman, with a focus on awarding the contract to a highly qualified private sector developer.
The procurement process for the Ibri III Solar PV project began earlier this year, with a total of 12 submissions received from both local and international developers. Nine applicants have been either conditionally or unconditionally qualified, representing a diverse range of countries including the Sultanate of Oman, United Arab Emirates, China, and Japan. Nama Power and Water Procurement Company is currently working on finalizing the Request for Proposals to be issued to the prequalified applicants.
Nama Power and Water Procurement Company has previously tendered three solar IPP projects in Oman, including Ibri II Solar IPP (operational since summer 2021) and Manah I Solar IPP and Manah II Solar IPP (under construction). By partnering with the Ministry of Energy and Minerals and the Authority for Public Services Regulation, the company aims to achieve the energy renewable targets set in Oman Vision 2040. The implementation of the Ibri III Solar PV project will contribute to advancing Oman’s renewable energy and energy resource diversification goals.
The prequalification of nine international companies for the Ibri III Solar PV project highlights the growing interest in renewable energy projects in Oman. With a focus on delivering world-class technology solutions, the project aims to support the country’s transition towards a more sustainable energy landscape. By adopting a fair and transparent competition process, Nama Power and Water Procurement Company aims to select a developer who can contribute to the advancement of Oman’s renewable energy sector.
As part of the efforts to diversify energy resources, the Omani government has implemented policies to encourage investment in renewable energy projects. The Ibri III Solar PV project is a significant step towards achieving these goals, with the participation of international companies adding valuable expertise and innovation to the development process. Through collaboration with various stakeholders, including government agencies and private sector developers, Oman is paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient energy future.
The successful implementation of the Ibri III Solar PV project will not only contribute to meeting Oman’s growing demand for electricity but also create opportunities for job creation and economic growth. By harnessing the abundant solar resources available in the region, Oman is positioning itself as a leader in renewable energy development. With a strong focus on achieving the objectives set out in Oman Vision 2040, the country is moving towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sector that will benefit both present and future generations.
