The summer vacation period in the UAE sees airports crowded with families jetting off on annual holidays. To reduce long queues during peak travel periods, Emirates Airlines is encouraging passengers to check in online or at alternative locations, which can save up to 25% of waiting time. Maryam Al Tamimi, VP (Passenger Services) at Emirates, highlighted that checking in online and then using self-service baggage drop kiosks at the airport can significantly speed up the process. Emirates is expecting to fly 2.6 million passengers from Dubai International Airport (DXB) during the peak travel period, with the busiest day anticipated to be on Saturday, July 6.

Checking in via the app or online is the most common method among passengers, with nearly 50% using it, which opens 48 hours ahead of the flight departure time. Passengers can also drop off their luggage at the airport the day before their flight for free, allowing them to proceed directly to the immigration area closer to departure time. Additionally, Emirates offers a city check-in facility at Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and Ajman Central Bus Terminal, where passengers can drop off their luggage between 24 hours and four hours before the flight. For first-class passengers and Platinum Skywards members, home check-in services are available at no cost.

Etihad Airways is also preparing for a busy summer season, with around five million travelers expected at Zayed International Airport between June and September. The airline offers home check-in services starting from Dh220, allowing passengers to skip the queues at the airport. Passengers using online check-in facilities can use automated self-service bag drops at the terminal. Additionally, Etihad Airways has introduced offsite check-in and bag-drop facilities, offering passengers 2,000 guest miles from June 10 to August 15. These services are available at the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal, The Fountains – YAS Mall, Mussafah, and Al Ain.

Emirates encourages all customers, including families with children and people with disabilities, to take advantage of the various check-in options available. However, customers traveling to the US must present their documents in person at the airport check-in areas due to US regulations. The airline aims to minimize queueing time during peak travel periods, with an average wait time of around 20 minutes but striving to keep it under 15 minutes. By utilizing online check-in and self-service kiosks, passengers can experience a smoother and quicker check-in process.

In conclusion, airlines in the UAE are implementing various strategies to streamline the check-in process and reduce queues during peak travel periods. By encouraging passengers to check in online or at alternative locations, such as city check-in facilities or home check-in services, airlines aim to improve the overall travel experience for customers. With the summer vacation season approaching, these initiatives can help reduce waiting times and ensure a more efficient journey for passengers flying from the UAE.
