Summer is a time for fun and relaxation, but it is also a time when children are at an increased risk of developing heat-related illnesses. With schools closed and children at home for the long summer break, it is important for parents and caregivers to take necessary precautions to protect their children from the dangers of excessive heat and humidity. Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in Doha, Qatar, is urging parents to be vigilant and ensure that children are not exposed to high temperatures or humidity, especially when engaging in outdoor activities.

Dr. Rafael Consunji, Director of Hamad Trauma Center’s Hamad Injury Protection Program (HIPP), emphasizes the importance of monitoring children’s outdoor play time and being aware of the signs and symptoms of heat stress. Children are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses than adults, as their bodies do not adjust to changes in environmental conditions as quickly. Therefore, it is crucial for parents to schedule outdoor activities during times when the temperature and humidity are low, or allow children to play in air-conditioned or shaded areas.

Common signs of heat stress and heat-related illnesses include elevated body temperature, cool/clammy skin, irritability, increased thirst/sweating, headache, feeling faint, dizzy, or weak. If these symptoms are ignored or left untreated, they can progress to more severe conditions such as heat exhaustion and stroke. Dr. Consunji advises parents to closely supervise their children while playing outdoors, ensuring they take regular breaks in air conditioned or shaded spaces, drink cool fluids, and wear appropriate clothing to stay cool.

To reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses in children, Dr. Consunji recommends using the ‘SMART’ techniques: supervising children during outdoor play, monitoring local heat and humidity forecasts, avoiding unshaded play areas, taking regular breaks every 30 minutes, timing outdoor play before 10am and after 4pm, and ensuring children stay hydrated. By following these guidelines, parents can help protect their children from the dangers of extreme heat and humidity during the summer months.

As the summer temperatures continue to rise, it is important for parents to be proactive in protecting their children from heat-related illnesses. By following the advice of experts at HMC and being aware of the signs and symptoms of heat stress, parents can ensure that their children stay safe and healthy during the summer break. With proper supervision, monitoring of weather conditions, and adherence to heat prevention precautions, parents can help their children enjoy outdoor activities while minimizing the risks associated with high temperatures and humidity.

In conclusion, the hot summer months can pose a serious threat to children’s health if they are not protected from excessive heat and humidity. Parents play a crucial role in ensuring that their children are safe during outdoor activities by following the recommended guidelines for preventing heat-related illnesses. By being aware of the risks and symptoms of heat stress, parents can take proactive measures to keep their children cool, hydrated, and safe during the summer break. With the right precautions in place, parents can enjoy the summer with their children while ensuring their well-being and health are not compromised.
