The recent Hajj season in Saudi Arabia saw 1,301 deaths, with Minister Fahd Al-Jalajel stating that 83% of the mortalities were unauthorized pilgrims who faced extreme heat stress due to walking long distances under direct sunlight without adequate shelter or comfort. Many of the deceased were elderly or chronically ill individuals. Despite the challenges faced during the pilgrimage, efforts were made by authorities to raise awareness about the dangers of heat stress and the importance of preventive measures. The minister extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that proper processes were followed for identification, burial, and honoring the deceased.

The health system in Saudi Arabia addressed numerous cases of heat stress during the Hajj season, with some individuals still under care. Despite the high temperatures experienced in the Holy Sites, there were no recorded outbreaks of epidemics or widespread diseases. The health system provided over 465,000 specialized treatment services, including 141,000 services to unauthorized pilgrims who did not obtain official authorization to perform Hajj. Minister Al-Jalajel expressed reassurance about the overall health condition of the pilgrims and highlighted the positive impact of the health authorities’ swift response and the effective support of the Hajj security forces in managing and reducing the effects of heat stress.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia provided free health services to pilgrims even before their arrival, with awareness programs conducted at air, sea, and land border crossings. Approximately 1.3 million preventive services were delivered, including early detection, vaccinations, and medical care upon arrival. The healthcare services offered during the Hajj season included open-heart surgeries, cardiac catheterization, dialysis, and emergency care, with over 30,000 ambulance services and 95 air ambulance operations ensuring the delivery of advanced health services in medical cities. Nearly 6,500 beds and rooms were made available, and measures to combat heat stress included the development of devices for the rapid and effective rescue of affected individuals.

Minister Al-Jalajel emphasized the successful conclusion of the Hajj season with no major health outbreaks and the delivery of specialized treatment services to pilgrims, including those who did not obtain official authorization. The healthcare system in Saudi Arabia played a crucial role in providing advanced medical services to pilgrims, with a focus on preventive measures, early detection, and timely intervention. The efforts made by the health authorities and the effective support of the Hajj security forces were instrumental in managing and reducing the effects of heat stress among pilgrims. Despite the challenges faced during the pilgrimage, the health system in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia demonstrated resilience and dedication in ensuring the health and safety of all individuals participating in the Hajj season.

In conclusion, the recent Hajj season in Saudi Arabia saw a significant number of deaths, with many unauthorized pilgrims succumbing to heat stress due to walking long distances under extreme conditions. The efforts made by the health system in providing specialized treatment services, raising awareness about preventive measures, and ensuring the overall health condition of pilgrims were commendable. Minister Al-Jalajel expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and highlighted the successful management of health services during the pilgrimage.
