A student company from the Wilayat of Ibri in Al Dhahirah Governorate has taken the initiative to use mesquite trees to produce high-quality wooden crafts and floor tiles. This student company, named Salaba, is part of the Ministry of Education’s efforts to support student ideas and enhance their entrepreneurship capabilities. The company’s innovative use of mesquite trees has resulted in environmentally friendly products that are resistant to wood-eating insects, easy to install, good insulators of heat, and moisture-resistant.
Yousef bin Mohammed Al Hinai, a career guidance specialist and supervisor of the student company’s team, explained that the idea for Salaba came about during discussions about mesquite tree removal campaigns due to their harmful impact on the environment. The team saw potential in utilizing the wood of mesquite trees in wooden crafts industries, which would not only benefit the environment but also save money and effort spent by authorities in removing these trees. The company obtained a license from the competent authorities to provide mesquite wood and secured a certificate of suitability for using this type of wood. Additionally, a contract was signed with a strategic partner to manufacture the products.
Muayyad bin Muslim Al Sarkhi, the Head of the student company, emphasized that Salaba has received significant encouragement and support from various institutions, including the General Directorate of Agriculture and Water Resources in Al Dhahirah Governorate, the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Al Dhahirah Governorate, the Vocational College in Ibri, and the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Ibri. The company’s goal is to expand its range of products made from mesquite trees and reach both local and foreign markets, aspiring to become a leading company in the manufacturing of wooden floors.
The student company’s initiative aligns with Oman Vision 2040, which aims to create a generation that works towards localizing industries to achieve globalization and expand Omani industries in various fields.
