Council of Higher Education meets to discuss progress and approve new programs and partnerships

The Board of Trustees of the Council of Higher Education in Bahrain recently met to discuss various topics related to the higher education sector in the country. Led by His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, the Minister of Education and Chairman of the Council, the meeting reviewed the readiness of private higher education institutions to start new academic programs and the progress of final exams for bachelor’s and master’s programs. Additionally, the Council examined the implementation of initiatives from the Higher Education Council’s Operational Plan.

During the meeting, the Council issued a resolution regarding regulations for field training programs at higher education institutions in Bahrain. This resolution establishes criteria for enrolling students in training programs as part of their academic curricula. The Council also acknowledged a new initiative aimed at developing a framework for research and development governance to enhance Bahrain’s competitiveness in the field of education. Several applications from different higher education institutions were reviewed and approved during the meeting, including proposals for new academic programs and memoranda of understanding with other universities in the region.

Some of the key decisions made during the meeting include the approval of the American University’s proposals to launch Bachelor of Science programs in Information Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Software Engineering. Kingdom University’s request to discontinue the Master of Sustainable Architecture program hosted by the University of Florence in Italy was also approved. Additionally, Gulf University’s request to sign a memorandum of understanding with the National Power Academy (NPA) in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain University of Technology’s requests to sign memoranda of understanding with universities in the UAE and India were approved.

The Council also approved various cooperation agreements, including Bahrain Medical University’s proposal to sign a cooperation agreement with the National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences in Taiwan. Furthermore, the Medical University of Bahrain’s request to reconstitute its Board of Trustees and the University of Strathclyde – Bahrain’s request to form an interim board of trustees were also discussed and approved. Arab Open University’s request to appoint a new president, Dr. Najma Ghuloom Redha Taqi, was also approved during the meeting.

During the meeting, the Minister of Education briefed the Council on the ongoing efforts to combat forged qualifications and unrecognized educational institutions. He noted that coordinated measures have been taken with the Public Prosecution to address these issues. Overall, the meeting of the Council of Higher Education in Bahrain covered a range of important topics related to the development and enhancement of the higher education sector in the country.
